Well, that’s one way to switch things up as we delve into the midway point of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Episode 4 found the past and present-day timelines converging like never before, and it was a satisfying watch.
Despite never appearing in the present-day timeline, Billy has maintained a grip on events because Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been slowly revealing pieces of the puzzle about what happened to him.
We’re being led to believe he’s dead, but if that is the case, he did a whole lot of research prior to his passing.
Bill’s life was undoubtedly changed when he learned about Keiko and Lee’s night of passion. Betrayal ran deep in his mind, but he still tried to be a father to Hiroshi.
There’s been so much emphasis on Hiroshi’s own parenting skills that no one really stopped to consider that he may have come from a broken home himself.
The flashbacks are doing a remarkable job of showing how Hiroshi became who he is in the present and how, with a different childhood, things may have been different.
In Hiroshi’s eyes, his mother was absent, and the man he thought he could turn to became cold and distant, before disappearing from his life entirely.
How is he supposed to process that without holding on to some resentment? The big issue plaguing everyone now is that Hiroshi has found the letter in which Keiko admits her affair with Bill.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Is Putting Together the Puzzle Pieces
Yes, she wrote it several decades ago, but it’s a piece of the puzzle that will allow Hiroshi to understand why Bill became this absent parental figure.
You could see the look on Keiko’s face when Hiroshi had the letter. So much time has passed, and she probably thought she’d never have to confront her night of passion with Lee.
The letter will do irreparable damage to Keiko’s relationship with her son, and, frankly, it’s going to put a big strain on their connection for the rest of the series.
This will also affect Hiroshi’s relationship with Lee, as he’ll blame him for being an obstacle to his parents’ love.
That’s huge and might fundamentally change how the team works together going forward.
When faced with life and death situations, there has to be trust, and without that, what does this group really have?
Hiroshi’s driving force throughout Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Episode 4 installment was to save Cate and retrieve the device to prevent Titans from attacking.
Nothing has been going his way, so seeing his reaction to the device destroyed by Apex made for an unsettling watch.
The only win he really got was that Cate was safe, but now that he’s questioning everything his mother’s ever told him, how will he be able to gather his thoughts and continue on this mission?
The only real positive for him is that he’s privy to the map of the Titan. He can thank Bill for that, of course.
Then there’s the Keiko of it all. How will she be able to continue on this mission while knowing that her actions had such a big impact on her son’s life?
She’ll be driven by the desire to use her expertise to save the world, but she’s going to feel judged for her actions. There’s no doubt about that.
Despite what happened during the calm before the storm, she looked very proud of her grandchildren, Cate and Kentaro.
She didn’t see them grow up, but she’s with them now, and my hope is that she can forge a bond with them and that they don’t see her past as a red flag.
In fact, the same can be said for most of the characters. Keiko’s return from the Axis Mundi should be looked at as a gift.
We don’t know whether there will be any long-term effects to her time in this dimension where time doesn’t move, but I’m invested in seeing her go back to Soledad and confront the past, once and for all.
Is May Making a Big Mistake?
May’s decision to skip out on Goonies 2 and stick with Apex was huge. She spent the entire episode trying to bring this company down, but Brenda fed her a compelling enough story about using the code to tame the species and co-exist with them.
That was music to May’s ears because it meant that her sacrifice in staying away from home and her family was worth something.
I just don’t trust Brenda and believe that she’ll find a way to get rid of May when she doesn’t have use for her. Brenda is opportunistic, and I doubt her intentions are rooted in good intentions.
She strikes me as someone who thinks about how to use people rather than form lasting connections.
For now, that might work for May, but I don’t see it lasting long once the government gets wind of the creatures Apex had in containment.
Every bad guy needs a fall guy, and I’m getting the impression that May will be Apex’s fall guy on this Apple TV hit.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 is gathering significant steam as we approach the midway point, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series has in store.
