Well, that’s one way to follow up on Hiroshi’s death.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Episode 6 began with most of the characters together, but they divided and conquered pretty quickly thereafter.
Despite stellar visuals and strong performances, this episode tried to do far too much for such a pivotal hour.
I figured there would be drama between Cate and Kentaro following their father’s death, and I expected Keiko to be the one to try to soothe things between them.
What I didn’t expect was for Kentaro to go straight for the jugular at the funeral and call out his sister.
The relationship between the siblings has been trying ever since they learned of each other’s existence.
They both have their own personal demons they’re battling, and in grief, it doesn’t look like they’re going to be able to work through these issues.
Kentaro’s anger toward Cate feels justified. If things had gone even slightly differently, Hiroshi might still be alive.
Ultimately, his death was due to his putting himself in the line of fire in the name of saving his daughter. It was a hero’s death, but that doesn’t mean Kentaro should brush it aside.
There’s no right or wrong answer when people are grieving, and the only real way to help is to listen and understand.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Has Sibling Rivalry
In an ideal scenario, they will be able to repair their relationship by the end of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2.
Sadly, I’m not sure what the show will look like when we reach that point. After a few episodes where it seemed evident that the narrative was preparing for a big swing, I’m worried about where things are going.
Cate and Keiko are undoubtedly a one-two-punch of a granddaughter and grandmother since they’ve managed to learn even more about Titan X without putting themselves in danger.
If Titan X is acting out of fear, then saving everyone might come down to steering it back on course.
The constant media attention surrounding the mystical being has understandably compelled the masses to deem it a villain, something Cate has been so eager to dispel.
It’s always interesting in these life-or-death scenarios where you have differing viewpoints on things, and the Titan X debate is poised to continue for another few episodes yet on this Apple TV thriller.
The look on Keiko’s face when she realized Cate was able to decipher some aspects of what Titan X was saying was clear.
Cate has got to be feeling terrible in the wake of her father’s death and the role she played in it, so this could be the big break she needs to prove her theory and give her the drive to continue.
Lee and Zook’s mission feels half-baked at best. It comes out of nowhere and nearly gets Lee killed, which makes the whole thing hard to buy.
Zook had to have gone to the funeral with an ulterior motive because he practically appeared out of thin air and dropped all of this information that could change everything.
Zook’s Return Should Have Raised More Questions
Lee and Keiko were far too trusting off the bat, and it could have resulted in another bad thing happening.
I really hope these characters start waking up. Stupid decisions are what get people killed.
That said, without this mission, Lee wouldn’t have learned that his father is still alive.
I genuinely thought that Bill was going to speak through that walkie-talkie, and honestly, I wouldn’t have been mad.
Adding Bill back into the mix, whether that’s the past iteration or the last one we saw, would be a great way to start bringing this narrative together.
But I’m not sure what we have to gain from Lee’s dad being alive and his team being killed on a mission.
It raises many questions about what we don’t know about these characters vs. what we do.
The flashbacks showed Lee’s father to be a hard man who wanted the best for his son, but I don’t see them continuing from where they left off on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
The best aspect of these flashbacks was how they showed that Lee was open to making selfless decisions in the name of doing what he believed was right for Keiko.
In the immediate aftermath of their encounter, he was evidently confused about his feelings. How could he act as if nothing had happened between him and Keiko?
It didn’t feel natural to him, so his removing himself from the situation and plotting his exit showed what kind of man he is.
He was open to making this sacrifice, even if it meant never seeing Keiko or Bill again.
That takes guts, but I’m also glad that he didn’t leave because, despite his night of passion with Keiko, the three of them were such a team.
I do wish they had been more open and just told Bill, because, although it would have hurt him, the present-day storyline may have been in a much better place.
But life happens. So, would it really have been better?
We’re headed into the final episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, and I can’t wait to see what’s coming.
