Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness [moves] to March 25, 2022. Sam Raimi will direct Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the sequel.

5th February 2020 – Sam Raimi in Talks to Direct

Marvel is looking to close a deal with Sam Raimi to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness following Scott Derrickson’s departure from the project. Derrickson will remain an EP on the sequel.

The sequel was announced at San Diego Comic-Con last summer with Derrickson then saying that the follow-up will “be the first scary MCU film”. Well, with Evil Dead filmmaker Raimi potentially aboard, he’s your guy. The pic is scheduled for release on May 7, 2021. With a possible WGA strike on the horizon, it’s in all major studios’ best interests to get their 2021 theatrical schedule filled, especially a big IP one like this for Disney. Production start is expected around May.

9th January 2020 – Scott Derrickson Exits Sequel

Scott Derrickson will no longer be at the helm of Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness. The studio confirmed the news to Deadline with a statement citing “creative difference” as the reason for Derrickson’s departure.

11th December 2018 – Scott Derrickson Returning to Direct Sequel

Scott Derrickson, who directed and co-wrote the mystical Marvel hero’s initial 2016 outing, has quietly finalized a deal to helm the new installment.

A search for a writer to pen the script is about to get underway.

Benedict Cumberbatch will return as Stephen Strange, the good doctor turned master of the mystic arts, as will Benedict Wong, who played his right-hand man, Wong. Rachel McAdams, who played Stephen Strange’s love interest, is likely to return as well.
