They cannot leave us hanging like that!
The best aspect of a two-part arc is that it’s super-sized. And the worst is that it usually means a cliffhanger.
NCIS: Sydney certainly left us with a massive cliffhanger with not one but two of our favorite characters in peril.
It was an hour I’ve been waiting for. Since Trigger’s introduction, NCIS: Sydney has piqued my curiosity about his past and why Rory was sticking him with JD and the team.
JD took him in no questions asked, even when it had Mackey raising a brow.
And since then, he’s been a great character who clearly harbored some secrets. Lone Wolf Part One finally sheds some light on his past.
To the surprise of no one, it’s as tragic as ever.
The big flag that had Rory benching Trigger was that he was flagged on his psych evaluation for having a death wish.
Chances are, after the murder of his fiancée, he lost the will to live in most regards.
When it comes to saving other people, it’s clear that Trigger will give his all. And it doesn’t sound like he’s actively suicidal in the sense that he’ll go out of his way to take his own life.
But if he so happens to die in the field, then so be it. It’s a welcome release from the pain he still harbors from losing someone he loved.
The hour opening with that explosion was such a shock. But the moment that got me was how resigned Trigger was when JDd broke the news to him.
In their job, he knows that losing friends and colleagues comes with the gig, and it’s something he’s prepared for.
The simple “how many” he asked got me, but then it really felt like a knife being twisted when JD told him that it was the entire squad.
From that point on, I suspected that the bombing and the one from two years ago were connected to Trigger.
It was clearly a case of his past catching up to and haunting him.
And my first thought was that somehow Rory was behind everything. I never put it past anyone, and it would’ve been a nice parallel for JD not to see that his friend was shady, the same way Mackey didn’t see it in hers.
I still don’t rule things out with Rory.
But it was a surprise when we learned that Wright’s son is the real bomber in both instances and that he’s the same person Trigger has been checking in on.
How sick is that?
I knew about 30 seconds before the big reveal that he was the real bomber. Then his feet hit the ground, and my concern for Evie skyrocketed.
Where the hour loses me a bit is how they’ve forced this Trigger and Evie thing. I’m not particularly into the concept of them as a pairing.
But they literally just introduced the idea of them two episodes ago, and they left it so ambiguous.
And now we see why. It was essential to make this situation with Trigger impactful.
Wright Jr. wants to make Trigger suffer and take everything he cares about away from him since Trigger killed his father over a decade ago.
I guess there’s no end to how much pain he wants to inflict. Killing Charlotte, Trigger’s fiancée, should’ve done the trick based on his reasoning.
But he wants to break Trigger completely. That meant killing his colleagues, and now he wants to kill Evie too.
They use dialogue to do a lot of heavy lifting in selling us on Trigger developing feelings for Evie, maybe not all serious ones, but at least coming to care about her.
And they try to tie that to him getting a chance to save a woman he cares about now in a way that he couldn’t succeed in before.
They have also heightened the stakes since Wright shot him, ensuring that he got him where his vest wasn’t covering him.
And he also moved up the timeline. There are now two minutes before everything goes boom.
There’s a chance that Trigger would have succumbed to everything, but with Evie in danger, there’s not a chance in hell he’d let anything happen to her.
I also would like to think that he’s less inclined to put his life in danger recklessly now that he’s connected with the gang.
He’s grown fond of everyone, and they’re like a gang of misfit toys… he belongs with them.
It genuinely caught him off guard that Mackey didn’t bench him from this case, and she was sincerely checking up on him.
I love Trigger so much. This episode of NCIS: Sydney is like catnip for me, especially when it comes to learning more about him. And it’s stressful to think that he may not make it out of this.
He’s more “expendable” than Evie, and he’s the sort that would put his life on the line to save her.
Especially since he’s reevaluating that day now, he’s left to wonder if Wright really was reaching for a weapon and if he shot an unarmed man.
That’s where I’m left to wonder if Rory has something to do with this whole scenario. It’s already suspicious that he didn’t tell JD and Mackey about Wright and that connection.
They lost precious time because he was withholding something he knew was pertinent. There’s no getting around its relevance to the case and what was going on.
He’s also the one who benched Trigger. There’s more to what’s going on, and Rory has to be at the center of it. And it’s likely that he’s the reason that Trigger shot Wright Sr., too.
After all, wasn’t it Rory who yelled, “Gun?” Trigger is paying the price for something that his boss may have orchestrated, and it’s already suspected that he sent the bomb squad into that house without clearing it first.
Yeah, all eyes are on Rory around these parts.
Memories are a tricky thing. Do we really think Trigger would’ve shot an unarmed man? There has to be more to this story, hence the two-parter.
