Outlander Season 8 made its debut, and the season will bring the epic story of Claire and Jamie to an end.
At least to an end like the TV show can. There is still another book to come!
The world of Outlander has grown considerably, and there’s something Matt B. Roberts relayed to us in an exclusive that made it clear more Outlander shows could be on the horizon.
Not All Outlander Storylines Will Be Wrapped Up
While speaking with us, Roberts teased that not all storylines will be wrapped up in a way people would perceive as closure for the series.
Some certainly will be, and we’re expecting to see that for the likes of Claire and Jamie and maybe even Brianna and Roger.
However, when it comes to other characters, the lack of closure opens the door for Outlander spinoffs.
It’s not like fans have been quiet about wanting spinoffs involving current characters, with Lord John Grey being the one that many fans want to see the most.
Diana Gabaldon even has a whole novella series that Roberts and his creative team could turn to if they wanted to launch that spinoff.
As of now, there are no official plans, but that doesn’t mean discussions aren’t happening in the background.
The series preventing storylines from fully closing keeps the door open to further shows in the universe.
Outlander Season 8 has seen Fraser’s Ridge grow considerably while Claire and Jamie were away, with a trading post set up and the introduction of Captain Charles Cunningham and his wife.
The Outlander Season 8 Premiere also brought back Amy McCallum and her two sons, who settled on the Ridge during Outlander Season 5 and haven’t been seen since.
We got to see Marsali and Fergus again with all their children, opening the door for more adventures for this branch of the Fraser family tree, and we can’t overlook everything that is still happening in Scotland, as Jenny Murray remained there.
Speaking of the Murrays, Young Ian and Rachel’s family is growing.
There’s also Rachel’s brother, Denny, who is making a name for himself as a surgeon in the Revolutionary War.
With so many characters, it’s understandable why Roberts and his team couldn’t wrap up all their stories, creating the potential for spinoffs to keep them going.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood Has Already Proven Successful
Starz has spent time creating universes for some of its more popular worlds.
The White Queen spawned the technical spinoffs The White Princess and The Spanish Princess.
While the shows weren’t technically spinoffs with the same actors, they were set in the same worlds and based on Philippa Gregory’s source material, centered around these characters.
And Power has grown into multiple spinoffs, making it clear that creating worlds is something the network is interested in.
When Outlander: Blood of My Blood was first ordered, nobody was surprised, especially as Diana Gabaldon had already talked of a prequel novel about Claire and Jamie’s parents.
That spinoff has proven successful, landing a second-season renewal ahead of the first season premiere.
This could be a good time for Starz to revisit the idea of a Lord John Grey spinoff, depending on how Outlander Season 8 ends for the character.
There are also potential spinoffs involving Master Raymond and Frank Randall, both of whom are full of intrigue and mystery.
It makes sense that nobody will want to discuss the spinoff ideas just yet, as this could ruin the way Outlander Season 8 ends.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood never risked ruining the flagship series, as it’s a prequel, but talk of a future spinoff would likely involve current storylines.
After all, with the Faith story, there is a possibility Master Raymond could show up.
While the Lord John Grey spinoff idea definitely feels like the most obvious direction, it could also give away too much of the series finale. We’ll have to see!
However, with Outlander coming to an end, Starz will jump at the chance to expand on such a popular universe, so it’s not a matter of if we are getting some spinoffs, but when.
It’s just a matter of time before Starz orders spinoffs!
