Here we go again with the silly AI stereotypes… or at least that’s how it seemed at first.
Scrubs Season 10 Episode 5 used AI chatbots as a running joke during JD’s attempt to move on from Elliot, but it was far less annoying than usual.
JD’s dating misadventure and related stories felt more like the series I fell in love with than ever before, which is saying a lot, since Scrubs Season 10 has done a great job of picking up where the older series left off.
I Thought I Had Scrubs Season 10 Episode 5 Figured Out But I Was Wrong
By the first commercial, I was sure I knew exactly where this was headed.
JD was interested in a blonde woman with a similar face structure to Sarah Chalke, so I assumed he’d end up with a replica of Elliot and have to struggle with realizing he wasn’t over the original.
There might have been some humorous scenes in that premise, but it’s been done a million times before.
I forgot this is Scrubs. The series that once had Elliot gently let down the Janitor wasn’t going to do the same thing everyone else does.
Instead, JJ’s date ended prematurely because JD didn’t want to have meaningless sex while thinking about Elliot.
The best part of that set-up was that it used an actual flashback from an earlier episode — most likely one from Scrubs Season 1.
I got the “not over Elliot” part right, but the other half was far more unpredictable and funny.

I especially liked the role reversal, with JD being the one to decline sex and the woman insisting that since she paid for dinner, he owed her.
It’s too bad it went that way, though. I liked her until she became sex-obsessed.
The Dr. Park Subplot (And Turk’s Opinion) Was Entirely Unnecessary
If there’s one way that Scrubs Season 10 is weaker than the earlier seasons, it’s Dr. Park.
First of all, I can’t stop thinking of The Good Doctor‘s Alex Park whenever I hear that name, though I suppose I’ll get used to there being a second Dr. Park on TV.
After all, JD’s name is only one letter away from Ingrid’s last name on Watson.
The more serious issue is that this guy doesn’t work as a foil for JD.
He’s not a Dr. Cox-type who has any power over JD or secretly likes him while being a pain in his ass.
If anything, he’s a replacement for Neil Flynn’s Janitor, the guy who always hated JD for no apparent reason and used to cause trouble for him at every turn.
However, he’s a weak sauce version of that type of character.

The Janitor worked because he was randomly violent and mean without being scary.
He was originally conceived as a figment of JD’s imagination and, in fact, was only supposed to appear in the pilot, but stayed for eight years because he was that good an enemy for JD.
Park, on the other hand, is your run-of-the-mill jealous colleague who wants to make JD’s life miserable because JD beat him out for the Chief of Medicine position.
The motivation is okay, but the types of problems Park causes are far more predictable and uninteresting.
He looks for rules he can prove JD is breaking, or patients he doesn’t handle right, which is far less fun than the random practical jokes and schemes the Janitor used to get JD’s goat.
Turk’s contribution to this was silly, also, because JD is far from the first person to have dated someone else who works in the hospital.
Not only was JD married to Elliot, but Turk is married to Carla. I was glad Turk FINALLY pointed that out, but it shouldn’t have taken until almost the end of the episode to get there.
The Dating Debacle Solidified JD and Turk’s Bromance (Again!)
The best thing about Scrubs has always been JD and Turk.
Their friendship straddles the line between close friends and asexual romantic partners and always has, and I never get tired of jokes that make them sound like a married couple.
Scrubs Season 10 Episode 5 made it more clear that their friendship is eternal no matter what else is going on in either of their lives.
It was Turk who came and got JD after the date went south, and the two of them falling asleep on the couch together was one of the most adorable tags Scrubs has had so far.
The Interns Gave Us A Running Joke Without Taking Over The Show
I loved the joke about the charge nurse’s chair, although it was a little silly that Amara got caught in the crossfire.
Park even got to redeem himself a little by explaining that the chair was sacred because nurses are the unsung heroes of hospitals.
I was less fond of the developing triangle over Amara, but it worked as a mirror of JD’s fear of pursuing Elliot again and his realizing that she’d moved on.
