I didn’t expect Cox’s visit to be so emotional.
Scrubs Season 10 Episode 8 brought back the legendary doctor, only to pull the rug out from under everybody by revealing that he’s seriously ill.
Hopefully, JD will make good on his promise to keep Cox alive for a long time, but either way, this more-dramatic-than-funny episode of Scrubs reminded me of why I’ve loved this show for years.
Scrubs Has Always Leaned More Toward the Medical Drama Side Than It Admits
Although Scrubs is considered a comedy, it established early in its original run that that wasn’t quite true, with the heartbreaking episode in which JD had to accept an older woman’s choice to die rather than accept dialysis.
That’s as it should be. Scrubs can’t take the idea of medical residency seriously without including the harder parts of becoming a doctor: serious mistakes, patients who will die despite the doctor’s best efforts, and the need to give some patients news that nobody wants to hear.
That was doubly true on Scrubs Season 10 Episode 8. The season’s penultimate episode followed the tradition of serious medical stories mixed with light comedy almost perfectly, with both Tosh and JD facing painful situations on the job.
JD’s hit harder because the man whose approval he has clung to for 25 years was now potentially dying — and more than that, Cox is a beloved (or at least a love-to-hate) character who was one of the most important parts of the series when JD and his friends were interns.
Still, I’m Glad Turk Called JD Out On Still Needing Cox’s Approval
Before Scrubs began, I was concerned about this issue. Half the humor of the earlier episodes revolved around JD’s desperation for Cox’s approval, and I didn’t want a redux.
As it was, it was more sad than funny that JD needed Cox’s approval so badly when he was first starting out, but it was more understandable for a young doctor than for a middle-aged man who had just become Chief of Medicine.

I had been afraid that we were in for 9 episodes of JD still chasing after Cox, and I didn’t want that because he should have long-since outgrown it.
Fortunately, it didn’t come up for most of Scrubs Season 10, and when Cox returned, Turk told JD to cut it out.
I’d love it if Asher started hanging onto JD like that, for the sole purpose of being the mirror that makes JD realize what he’s looked like for 25 years.
Cox’s remark that JD has annoyed him for that long was one of the funniest lines in the episode because there was so much truth in it, too. The Cox-JD train derailed a long time ago, but Cox’s one-liners are as strong as ever.
Cox Didn’t Improve Park One Bit
Park is insufferable, period. He’s not funny like Cox — he’s just annoying.
Sadly, having him and Cox tag-team against JD didn’t help matters any. Cox can pull it off and Park can’t.
It was painfully obvious that Park was trying to be like Cox used to be. He was dismissive and condescending with Blake, who pushed back the way JD used to when he thought his medical opinion was right.
When Park turned out to be the one who knew best, it revealed how much is wrong with his character.
Cox was always as rude about it when JD, as an intern, didn’t agree with him, but underneath that was the determination to make sure these interns grew into extraordinary doctors.

Park doesn’t seem to have that passion for teaching or for medicine.
He just wants to be right and rub it in the interns’ faces, and on those rare occasions where he tries to impart a lesson, it fails miserably because his heart isn’t in it.
Dr. Cox Will Probably Do Better Than He Expects
I’m 95% sure that Dr. Archer had the same type of kidney disease on Chicago Med. In his case, he eventually needed a transplant, but it’s not clear whether Cox’s condition will progress to that point.
If it did, I can imagine the hilarious-but-painful scenes that would come out of that storyline, with JD wanting to be the one to give Cox a kidney and Cos absolutely refusing to allow a part of JD inside him.
In any case, there’s too much dramatic and comedic gold in Cox having to work with JD to manage his condition, so it would be pointless to kill him off any time soon.
Still, the scene where he asked JD to keep him alive got to me, and I doubt I’m the only one who teared up during it.
Meanwhile, Elliot’s story with Tosh was also emotional, but it felt slightly like a rerun.
On Scrubs Season 10 Episode 4, Elliot learned not to discount Tosh’s medical opinions solely because she’s also a TikTok influencer, and their argument here felt like the same flavor of conflict.
I preferred Tosh and Elliot freaking out over a mistake to the basketball-with-heads game that Turk and Asher kept playing, though.
I’m not a fan of headless mannequins, including dummies used for medical training, so these scenes were a no-go for me.
The running joke of Turk hitting the nurse while aiming for the bin also didn’t do much for me.
But that’s a minor complaint in what was overall one of the strongest episodes of the season.
