Sheriff Country’s Finale Rejection Was So Chill Even Matt Lauria Did a Double Take

When we first got to know Nathan Boone on Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 1, he resigned after losing the sheriff position to Mickey.

It certainly set the tone for how we viewed him over the next few episodes, but then things started to shift.

He soon proved that he was the guy you would want by your side in a firefight, and that he was the man who would take rejection on the chin.

The Sheriff Country Season 1 Finale proved that he would stand up for what’s right, and he doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty when it’s needed.

However, there is sure to be some hurt feelings about how everything went down, and it’s something Matt Lauria talked about with TV Fanatic as we looked into how great Boone is as a friend and partner.

TV Fanatic: What was it like filming the finale with all that action?

Matt Lauria: Emotionally exhausting. It was obviously high-octane, with a lot of Boone flying across the screen. That was me, by the way!

Not a stunt double?

No, that was all me.

What was that like getting to do your own stunts, because I know they tend to shy away from that, so you don’t get hurt.

That was definitely within my wheelhouse. My stunt double, Derrick Barnes, is absolutely incredible, but that was something that I could do.

We do rely on stunt doubles for a lot of stuff.

And Boone is tested over and over again. How much more can he take?

It’s a lot of eating and swallowing bitter pills.

As you know, when we’ve chatted before, I’m on Mickey’s side of the debate over whether Boone and Mickey should be together. I’m not the biggest fan of a boss and a subordinate being together.

That being said, if you were both deputies, the chemistry is there, and I love that!

But Boone handles that rejection so well. He’s disappointed but not toxic, so can we talk about how great that is?

So, you’re saying no Bookey?

Can we knock Mickey down to deputy with you? I actually think she needs to stay single for a while, though.

Haha, yeah! That was some heavy stuff.

But Boone has a lot of great character. It’s an unimpeachable character.

It was very unlike Boone to pop in that way, and he regrets it. He probably feels embarrassed about it, and he alludes to that with Mickey after burning her with those feelings.

Boone is a professional and respects protocol, so he would never blur the lines between sheriff and deputy without extenuating circumstances that brought it out of him.

I think that’s what I love about Boone. He takes it on the chin. She’s said what she’s said, and now he’s moving on. There is no animosity. There’s no disrespect.

These guys are incredibly close. They rode together in a car day in, day out for two-plus years.

He has devoted himself to backing her as his number one and taking the role of her number two very seriously. He’s a person she can depend on.

And with so much trust, how is he feeling about everything that went down with Alec?

He knew she wasn’t being forthright with him. She was disrespecting him in front of this other guy, who he knew was a crummy dude.

It’s a hard thing when you have these two alphas together like this.

He knew she was being hoodwinked by this guy, and he feared for her safety and her station. She could end up sabotaging her position, so there’s a lot on the line.

When she confirmed that Alec was the guy they were after, was there a bit of relief?

I don’t know if it was relief. More of “what else is on the table?”

They’re so close. They’ve relied on each other, and they were knocking on death’s door together during the siege. They are in each other’s lives.

At any given moment, they could die. So, there were questions about why Mickey would lie to Boone.

So, I don’t think it was relief.

And look at what happened at the end with getting shot! He had to eat spoonfuls of you-know-what for two episodes straight to end up shot by the dude!

I was so glad we didn’t end Sheriff Country Season 1 with that as a cliffhanger. I stopped the show to check the timer count and make sure you would survive!

They did an incredible job!

It’s not all tied up in a pretty little bow. Now they have to confront its complexity.

These two have a very complicated relationship. They’ve been through a lot.

We’ve now got to deal with all of that. I’ve read the first episode of Sheriff Country Season 2, and it’s not like we pick up vaguely remembering some of what went down.

We actually have to deal with it, such as the love of Mickey’s life dying (or who she thought was the love of her life) after lying to her, the mom stuff, there’s so much.

But Boone’s got a lot of integrity, and he’s not going to get toxic or fussy. He’s got a lot of respect for Mickey, so he takes what she says and moves on.

He’s got this other lady with whom there’s some incredible chemistry, and he is very interested in law enforcement dudes. We’ll see where that goes.
