After quickly establishing itself as a breakout in the sitcom genre, Shrinking hasn’t received nearly the awards it deserves.
Sure, it’s been nominated for multiple Emmys, but an actual win has yet to come by for this show.
But after watching Shrinking Season 3 Episode 7, I’m convinced this series could have a real shot at winning this year.

Shrinking Season 3‘s storytelling balances serious subject matters with a comedic tone and deserves recognition for advancing conversations about mental health.
Plus, the praise for the actors on this series is long overdue. Hear me out, Emmys.
Laughing Until We’re Crying
This season of Shrinking has had some really heartwarming moments and tear-jerking scenes.
But the show has maintained a surprisingly skillful balance between the two moods.
This rings true with the contrast of Liz’s storylines, ranging from babysitting Brian’s new baby to standing by Derek’s side during health problems.

The balance is also evident in how the show has covered Paul’s progression with Parkinson’s and how he and his loved ones deal with the news of his retirement.
Somehow, the sitcom still finds funny moments with Paul’s stubbornness that shed some light on the darker moments.
Shrinking Season 3 Episode 7 serves as a great example of how the series continues to create moments of joy without detracting from moments of grief.
The comparison of Alice and Jimmy celebrating Tia’s birthday in joy after her loss really demonstrates how Shrinking has radically reframed grief.
Additionally, ending with Gabby learning about Maya’s death ties back to the way in which grief is a continuous struggle for many therapists to deal with in their personal and professional lives.

Shrinking achieves all this nuanced storytelling while still delivering hilarious jokes and bits that have us laughing until we tear up.
It’s truly such a massive achievement for a series to be three seasons in and still maintain its versatility.
There’s no doubt that other contenders in the Emmy comedy categories, such as Abbott Elementary, deserve some awards show love.
But given that Shrinking has yet to win a single Emmy since Shrinking Season 1 in 2023, it’s about time that this Apple TV series earns some recognition.
Of course, there’s more to success than these industry accolades, but it would also be extremely rewarding for the creatives and cast to get the honor they deserve.
Give Jessica Williams Her Emmy!

Jason Segel and Harrison Ford have rightfully gotten praise for their roles on Shrinking.
But Shrinking Season 3 has proven that Jessica Williams as the indomitable Gabby is the true unsung hero of the series.
Her journey of figuring out what she wants to dedicate the next stage of her life to has been a rewarding watch.
More importantly, Gabby’s attempts to reach Maya and her subsequent arc of coping with what she deems a professional failure have knocked it out of the park.
She’s more than just a smart woman with great quips; she’s a well-rounded character who experiences relatable highs and lows in her career and her personal life.

With Gabby’s arc, Shrinking really emphasizes the humanity of therapists and how all-encompassing grief can be, even for professionals trained to handle emotions.
Of course, Gabby wouldn’t be such a lovable character if not for the wonderful Jessica Williams, who deserves a shoutout for being the rising star of this show.
As the Oscars wrap up movie awards season, it’s time to start hoping that the Television Academy finally recognizes the unforgettable work of the latest Shrinking season.
