Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 3 Review: Regulatory Compliance Be Damned

Nothing illustrates why River Cartwright is Slough House through and through better than pairing him with a capable agent like Sid Baker.

Even with a piece of a bullet named Poirot still lodged in her skull, she still runs circles around him and all his emotional baggage.

Which only makes her faith in Diana Taverner that much more tragic.

Slow Horses “Resurrection”

As the season hits its stride with Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 3, “Resurrection,” our misfit team spreads out to gather and protect ex-members and underage murder witnesses.

It stretches them thin as each pod must contend with outsiders who haven’t learned that second-guessing Lamb’s training can be fatal.

Reece Nesmith, the recently orphaned son of ex-Dog Andrew Nesmith and a witness to Frank Harkness’s particular skill set, has every reason to distrust the two strangers who show up at his children’s home to whisk him away in the middle of the night.

And of course it’s Lamb and Ho who undertake his rescue. Even Coe would’ve gotten past that front desk lady with less acrimony.

Speaking of Coe, my heartiest laugh was when he chided River for bad manners and offered the front seat to Sid. After which he pointed out that she’s supposed to be dead.

Always making an impression, that Coe.

And yes, of course, the fart-off in Lamb’s car was hilarious, but come on, you KNEW Lamb wasn’t going to let that Reece get away thinking his fluffy-on-demand skill was unique, right?

No one’s going to out-drink, out-swear, or out-flatulate Jackson F’ing Lamb.

Rounding Them Up

So, to recap, Lamb and Ho have the kid, while River and Sid have Coe. And the assassins.

That leaves Shirley and Standish to corral a resistant Louisa and an exasperating Moira.

To be fair, Moira’s just been snatched back from the gassy jaws of death, and she’s always been… well, Moira.

Louisa’s the one that really grinds my gears. What an ungrateful skank.

One can only assume that she’s been ghosting River’s calls since last season. Honestly, if Slow Horses Season 1 was only three years ago, she’s probably been gone from Slough House for less than six months.

Moving on is understandable. Being a jerk about it when they come find you with obvious urgency is less so. Especially since it was Shirley and Standish.

Lamb could’ve sent Coe. Coe would’ve just blackbagged her in the parking lot and dumped her in the boot.

Civilian life clearly agrees with Louisa. Company car, nice clothes, and trips to Bali. Why wouldn’t it?

What sets Louisa apart from the other Slow Horses is a sense of self-preservation. She didn’t let her identity as a spy trap her in a life that saw both her romantic partner and her MI5 partner killed.

Come to think of it, the final straw could very well have been River expressing romantic interest in her. Oh my god, can you imagine? Talk about the biggest red flag ever.

Why Buy the Cow…

The title, “Resurrection,” probably refers to Sid’s return, but it also suggests that a lot of other things are coming back.

As mentioned before, in the review of Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 2, “Daddy Issues,” this season has had a lot of Season 1 chickens come home to roost.

Taverner, in particular, looks haunted as the fallout from her interview on Cantor’s television network spirals.

Lamb’s middle-of-the-night visit doesn’t improve her mood either, but their sit-down in her garden, as uninvited as it is, does seem to steady her.

Fun fact: In Mick Herron’s 2023 Slow Horses-adjacent novel, The Secret Hours, two characters very reminiscent of Lamb and Taverner (but never named) meet in a garden. The tone of that conversation is very similar to this encounter.

Lamb might get under her skin and irritate the heck out of her, but he’s an opponent she knows well and—although she’d never admit it—respects.

The Peter Judds and Damien Cantors of the world, on the other hand, would be removed and buried deep if she had the option.

So is Sid correct to trust that Taverner can keep her safe? Or does River have the right of it in assuming that Taverner’s the whole reason Sid’s in danger?

My money’s on River’s take, although he’s probably missing a few key points along the way. He usually is.

At least he’s keeping up with Sid this time around, and even scored some cred by turning that car into a Molotov cocktail.

I’m not sure I’m cool with them taking off and leaving the two very angry assassins alone with Anne after she fed River (to a degree) and let Sid use her computer.

The woman assassin slipping into Russian is a fascinating development, especially with all the talk of the Russian nerve agent attack on UK soil.

“Resurrection” ends with the most cliffhanger-esque moment in a cliffhanger-filled season.

With Sid and River headed into the bowling alley, trailed by the two assassins, and Coe in the car, how much plot armor can we count on?
