St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 16 Throws More Challenges In Joyce’s Way

- Advertisment -

St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 16 brings back a familiar face from a previous episode and asks whether Joyce is ready for a fresh start.

The birthing center plotline has been a great overarching structure for the season, giving Joyce a purpose.

Meanwhile, Bruce and Matt find themselves on the field on an EMT run and confront some of their greatest fears.

The laugh of the week comes from Serena and Bruce’s plotline of going to war over the best pen in the hospital.

This St. Denis Medical episode taps into some of the show’s best dynamics while delivering some emotional truths the characters need to hear.

Who Wants To Be A Midwife?

It finally seems that the birthing center is chugging along steadily after previous setbacks.

But of course, nothing is ever as simple as it seems, as Joyce finds herself faced with a conundrum when she tries to hire a midwife.

After Alex’s helpfulness on St. Denis Season 2 Episode 9, in which she helped Joyce break off her engagement, she once again finds herself as Joyce’s right-hand woman.

This episode brings back Ashley, who was introduced on St. Denis Season 2 Episode 10 as Sanderson’s new love interest.

Ashley is played by Kristen Schaal, arguably one of the best voice and comedic actresses of recent decades, with her work on shows like Bob’s Burgers and What We Do in the Shadows.

So, I was delighted to see that she was brought back to absolutely crush this guest-starring role.

I also appreciated how the show forced Joyce to choose between her personal grudges and professional aspirations.

For someone as work-driven as Joyce, having the two intertwined puts her in a difficult spot.

But thanks to Alex’s wise advice and Joyce’s listening to her gut instincts, she ends up making a decision that’s best for the future of her beloved birthing center.

It’s also a real moment of character growth for Joyce as she finally figures out how to manage her work priorities with her emotional state.

Joyriding in an Ambulance

I’ve been loving this focus on Bruce and Matt’s friendship, especially after the last episode, when Bruce nearly left St. Denis Medical.

It’s the perfect pairing: a character who’s overly confident and a character who needs more confidence.

The storyline of Bruce and Matt going on a hands-on EMT run together brought out this dynamic.

Bruce especially turns up the dial on the extremes he goes to, as he almost gets himself injured while trying to help someone with a bee sting.

The greatest moment in this plotline was when Matt and Bruce stood on the roof together and had an open, honest conversation.

The empathy Matt offers Bruce about his fear of heights is exactly why the young nurse is set up for success, and it’s one of my favorites on the show.

It’s refreshing to see Bruce finally–even if begrudgingly–give himself permission to ask for help instead of being the one offering it.

Surprisingly, Bruce also offers insights, advising Matt to take the leap with Serena (which is what I’ve been saying all along!).

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

Since the Season 2 premiere, Matt and Serena’s will-they-won’t-they has been a recurring story that I’ve enjoyed following.

Bruce’s belief that Matt’s ability to finally confront his feelings for Serena might be the final push for the nurse to try admitting his feelings for her again.

Especially after the Steve debacle at Matt’s birthday party on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 14, I think it’s safe to say that Matt and Serena are meant to be.

Give Me Back My Pen!

We’ve already seen Serena and Ron face off earlier this season on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 3.

This episode dives into their brief but intense rivalry over a disputed pen.

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

Serena is the perfect opponent for Ron because she continues to stand her ground, immune to Ron’s attempts at manipulation.

The best moment of this sequence was definitely the unexpected burst of screaming they both let out, all over this pen.

But of course, at the end of the day, friendship will always be stronger than a piece of stationery.

The past few episodes have seen Ron in increasingly silly situations that rely on his grumpiness and inability to compromise.

This move makes sense after the emotional confrontation with his son on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 12.

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

However, I would love to check back in to see how Ron’s relationship with his son is going before the end of the season.

Overall, there was a wonderful balance of jokes and heart-to-heart moments that brought out what makes the show so great.
