The best part of St. Denis Medical is the characters who make the magic happen–and this episode doesn’t forget that.
After an entire season of build-up, the birthing center has finally received its grand reveal thanks to Joyce’s tireless efforts.
Even though Joyce has the moral support of Alex and Val–as well as some helpful fibbing from Matt and Serena–she faces her toughest uphill battle yet to get recognition.
Meanwhile, Ron’s plans to go on a fishing trip are foiled by the not-so-great results from medical tests, and Bruce’s support during the process is not exactly encouraging.
Given the jaw-dropping ending and the continuous twists and turns throughout, St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 17 is one of the series’ most memorable episodes to date.
The Righteous Woman Strikes… And Misses
A few weeks ago, actress Wendi McLendon-Covey gave us a sneak peek of this week’s episode with a single phrase: Righteous Woman.
And what a righteous woman Joyce is.
After all the endless hours she has put into making the birthing center a success, it’s no surprise that Joyce attempts to make the event a huge splash in the community.
Alex and Val both come along for the ride, offering varying degrees of rallying cheers during the grand opening.
After so many episodes of Val’s vengeance, such as her feud with Ron on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 13, getting to watch her try being positive is refreshing.
Of course, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t get a few trademark snarky comments in, including a hilarious comment about being gay that really brought out her deadpan personality.
Alex, on the other hand, has a more active role in propping Joyce up.
She’s been increasingly involved in helping Joyce get out of messes, especially given her patience with Joyce’s brief engagement on St. Denis Medical Season 2, Episode 9.
But after the debacle with the women’s choir and a slippery stage, Alex’s support isn’t nearly enough to comfort Joyce.
Out of all of the characters, St. Denis Medical Season 2 has been the roughest for Joyce, both in terms of her personal and professional life.
Her breakdown in the gift shop truly illustrated how comically horrible everything has been going for her, but it also helped her confront the difficult truth of her self-sacrificing habit.
I appreciate that the show tackled the enormous pressure placed on her, especially as a woman in power, in such an empathetic way while still maintaining a humorous tone.
And while the ending to the opening ceremony may not have gone the way Joyce was expecting, she definitely learned a valuable lesson on what’s truly important to her life.
We’re Having A Baby!
One of the first things that got me hooked on St. Denis Medical from Season 1 was Matt and Serena’s perpetual situationship. And boy, did this episode make me feel so vindicated.
After the whole incident with Chaplin Steve at Matt’s Birthday party on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 16, it’s become increasingly clear that Serena and Matt are meant for each other.
While this pair doesn’t get nearly enough screen time, they make every moment count, as the chemistry between Mekki Leeper and Kahyun Kim is effortlessly natural.
I’m personally such a huge sucker for the fake dating trope, and St. Denis Medical did it justice.
The dedication that Matt and Serena have to their charade as an expecting couple is admirable and incredibly fun to watch.
For any other fans who are also emotionally invested in these two characters, that ending solidified this episode into the hall of fame for groundbreaking will-they-won’t-they couple scenes.
Minimal Moral Support
The most somber part of this storyline–yes, even with Joyce’s misfortunes–is Ron’s physical check-up.
I didn’t enjoy Bruce’s presence throughout the process, as it felt stilted given how serious Ron’s results seem.
Additionally, Bruce’s implied crush on the doctor administering tests is very underexplored in the episode, but it makes sense given the focus on Ron’s health.
However, I’m curious to see whether something will happen between Bruce and the doctor in future episodes.
The reversal of Ron inserting himself into Bruce’s business, turning into Bruce inserting himself into Ron’s business, worked very well, though.
The show made such a dark turning point in Ron’s storyline surprisingly accessible. We never lose sight of Ron’s lovable, grumpy self, who just wants to go fishing with his friend.
After a whirlwind of plotlines, I’m excited to see how St. Denis Medical wraps up the latest season and have high hopes that the finale will tee up an exciting start to Season 3.
