St. Denis Medical Season 2 Finale Reminds Us To Cherish Our Friends

- Advertisment -

If you told me at the beginning of St. Denis Medical Season 2 that the hero of the season would be Ron, I wouldn’t have expected that at all.

The show absolutely knocks it out of the park by bringing out the best in the characters as they all scramble to take care of Ron.

In particular, Alex and Joyce have some really great moments of growth and emotional confrontations while they reckon with the possibility of losing Ron.

Meanwhile, Bruce goes about the whole situation in a typical Bruce-like repressed manner, and Matt and Serena attempt to find a moment to communicate between the chaos.

St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 18 is a strong, heartfelt season finale that reminds us that these characters are more than just coworkers–they’re family.

Alex and Joyce To The Rescue!

After the birthing center debacle, Joyce seems to have finally sorted out her priorities.

She spends most of her time attempting to make Ron feel more comfortable before his surgery, but accidentally unleashes a horde of melodramatic people onto the grouchy doctor.

Similarly, Alex struggles to find a balance between well-meaning and overbearing as she tries to rally together people in the hospital to make gifts for Ron.

While she briefly feels some insecurity about her friendship with Ron, the scene where the two share a beautiful moment in the stairwell is a huge moment of growth for both characters.

I appreciated how approachable this episode made the topic of life-threatening surgery.

Particularly through Joyce and Alex’s behavior, St. Denis Medical really tackled the duality of wanting someone to be okay and grappling with the fact that they may die soon.

I loved that we got to see Ron’s perspective about his surgery, too.

Although he’s the most stoic character on the show, he shows some vulnerability when he shares his anxiety about the operation.

After his storyline about reconnecting with his son on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 12, Ron’s beloved status feels well-earned.

Even Val, who shares some of her usual sarcastic, aloof remarks, is deeply affected by Ron’s surgery, proving his importance to the staff at St. Denis.

The Will-They-Won’t-They Finally Gets Answered

Since the St. Denis Medical Season 2, Episode 1, the show has repeatedly teased Matt and Serena’s eventual romance.

But after their shared kiss on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 17, they’re still in the process of sorting everything out.

The miscommunication throughout the episode is frustrating to watch, but of course, the payoff is so worth it.

This storyline made it clear that, in the future, Matt needs to be more assertive.

He has a clear grasp of his feelings and is able to be honest about them, but he doesn’t often have the confidence to express them.

Given Serena’s confrontational nature, the show seems to be setting up the two to learn from each other as they navigate their new relationship.

Overall, I thought that the culmination of Matt and Serena’s arc this season was super well done.

Especially with the introduction of Serena and Steve’s brief fling halfway through the season, the tension built between the pair perfectly set up their concluding note.

Plus, I enjoyed the nice touch of having Bruce rooting for their relationship.

I can’t wait to see more of their budding romance next season!

Bruce Gets Brutal

Speaking of Bruce, he spends most of this episode demonstrating how much he actually cares about Ron in a very typical Bruce manner.

Poor Brooke gets the brunt of his paranoia, as he keeps pestering her out of worry for Ron’s surgery.

Admittedly, the lengths Bruce goes to, under the guise of somehow helping ensure Ron’s surgery goes well, are hilariously outlandish and serve as great moments of comic relief.

However, Bruce eventually can’t keep up his act and finally admits how deeply this situation is affecting him.

It’s rewarding to see Bruce finally let down his guard and openly admit he’s just as afraid as anyone else.

The scene of Bruce and his coworkers waiting in the hospital waiting room is sure to stick with me for a while.

I loved the emphasis on community and the importance of leaning on one another during times of stress.

My heart absolutely melted when everyone came together to recall their favorite memories with Ron and how much love they all share for him.

After a memorable season finale, St. Denis Medical has set itself up for an exciting Season 3, sure to continue following characters as they learn and grow.
