Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk hasn’t been my favorite Star Trek: Strange New Worlds legacy character.
It’s not that I’m a die-hard William Shatner fan — although if you haven’t seen Better Late Than Never, you should — but his Captain Kirk was Star Trek’s first established commander.

And that’s probably the issue. Wesley isn’t playing Captain Kirk.
He’s the proto-Kirk, the primordial mess of ambitious energy, charm, and confidence that will rise to one day coalesce into a Gorn-bashing, Klingon-hating, going-boldly space cowboy who pilots a franchise through a three-season-long five-year mission and seven films.

Bad-miral episodes are nothing new. Corrupt, unhinged, and/or disillusioned individuals in positions of power have tried to undermine Federation tenets and missions since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Danger Runs Deep
There’s an unfortunate imbalance between the two plotlines: the Reeger and Kirk conflict, with all its historical and emotional cargo, sucks up all the air, leaving Uhura’s away-mission heroics recognized but not as resounding as they should be.
[Minor-but-not-really-minor quibble: Standard protocol states the commanding officer and their second-in-command should never both leave the ship on a potentially dangerous field assignment.
Even Reeger knows that. This is clearly how Jim Kirk and Spock got the wrong ideas about away missions.]

Reeger, on his commandeered starship, at least covered his personal vendetta under the guise of a greater good.

Remember Your Training
After Uhura shared on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Episode 7, “Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass,” that she saw mentoring A’Sha as her next step in personal and professional development, a field trip makes total sense.
A’Sha, as deadpan-consistent as always, continues to be a Vulcan-y wet blanket on Uhura’s enthusiasm.

However, it’s Uhura’s first field mission on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 2, “Children of the Comet,” that becomes vital to the team’s survival.
Pike’s emphasis on her remembering her training is a callback to the caves below the comet’s surface, where her understanding of harmonics saved the day.
A’Sha, unfortunately, doesn’t view her training with such alacrity. Getting stabbed with poisonous crystal will do that to you, I guess.
Falling on the Sword
M’Benga taking the blame for Reeger’s Cordrazine roofie lays another paving stone in the path leading to Star Trek: The Original Series.
Canonically, M’Benga returns to the Enterprise during Kirk’s tenure as captain but only as a subordinate physician to Bones’ CMO. Reeger’s vow to destroy his career explains the demotion.

It’s a deliberate choice, in keeping with M’Benga’s admission on “Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass” that he feels disconnected from Starfleet. His career is no longer precious.
Chapel sees this as his way of making Starfleet abandon him so that he doesn’t have to abandon it.
He sees it as a sort of reparation to Jim Kirk for keeping quiet all these years about his father’s actions at the Battle of Reticulae.

The Kirk Legacy
The Kirk men’s backstory has come up multiple times this season. Although both Sam and James grew up wanting to serve in Starfleet, their father’s devotion to the organization could have easily soured them on it.
Even the malevolent entity aboard on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Episode 2, “The Griffin Incident,” found James’s deep apprehension about fatherhood rooted in his memories and resentment of his own father.

Learning that Reeger was the reason George spent so much time away from his family provides Sam and James some measure of closure.
Of course, the Days of the Enterprise soap opera reminded us that emotions linger, even when the details fade. It will take time to exorcise the memories of their feelings of abandonment.
By the way, although I haven’t taken to him as a future James T. Kirk, I LOVE Jim and Sam’s relationship.
Sam Kirk: I want plausible deniability. Like when we were kids.
Jim Kirk: Don’t tempt me with a good time.
Promotions Don’t Always Feel Earned
There’s an interesting little sub-thematic message about promotions and demotions here.
Jim gets promoted even though he’s not even an Enterprise crew member. Spock finds that illogical.
When Jim is demoted, Reeger promotes Spock in his place.

The Andorian smuggler tells Uhura he was dishonorably discharged for insubordination, the ultimate demotion.
For her actions in dealing with him, Pike and Una promote her, but she feels that she’s failed because A’Sha is leaving Starfleet.

As mentioned above, M’Benga claims that he drugged Reeger, knowing it would cost him his rank, if not his career.
A lot of this tracks back to Reeger and his ego. His outrage at having George Kirk assume his command and defeat four enemy ships in a battle undoes him completely.
And whether it was subconscious or not, he saw history repeating itself with James Kirk.

Captain Material
As I mentioned at the start, this iteration of James T. Kirk hasn’t worked for me so far. But a couple of things here indicated that the future captain is in the offing.
One, he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty.
Two, he’s always on the make. I mean, seriously, La’an STABBED him the last time they hung out, and he’s still interested? Although, to be fair, he does shoot her with a phaser on stun setting as payback of sorts.
Three, he bluffs like a pro. The best lies have kernels of truth. He uses Scotty’s intel to formulate a plausible blowback plan. It’s brilliant and very James T. Kirk.
