Gangsters like to project an image of toughness and being unbothered.
Everything is presented as a business move, with no personal motivations.
But the best stories happen when things get personal and winning becomes the only thing that matters.
In MobLand Season 2 Episode 2, “Song 2,” things are incredibly personal for almost every character.
The illusion of tight-knit families has officially broken, and everyone is tending to their own needs.
These needs have varying consequences, but I don’t think anything will be bigger than whatever steps Jan takes to protect her daughter from the world she’s been exposed to.
It is the biggest hour of reckoning for Jan as she watches her daughter go down the same path she went and has not felt peace since.
Joanne Froggatt delivers a powerful performance as a mother losing control, and the worst part is she knows she is to blame.
Sure, she had the bad boy, but what use is it when she must keep looking over her shoulder always?
It is even worse for Gina since that’s all she’s known: the omnipresent fear of becoming an orphan because of her father’s line of work.
While she doesn’t admit it, Jan will do something to free herself and her daughter from this family, and it doesn’t matter who she has to kill — even if it’s Harry himself.
And Harry isn’t doing much better himself because he knows how to fix a lot of things, but not what happened to his family.
There is no lever he can pull to make Gina or Jan do what he wants.
This personal issue will become his undoing if he doesn’t make the right moves.
Gina already thinks she’s a gangster because she is making some money shaking down YouTubers, but everyone knows this isn’t a sustainable business model.
What happens when the YouTubers realize they don’t have to deal with this and seek their own methods to protect themselves?

Harry will have to step in, and at that point, Gina’s in the game for life.
And that’s if she lives long enough, because Maeve has her eyes on her.
Now, Maeve is one elusive character because half the time I have no idea what she is doing and why.
It has been interesting watching her plan in the dark, but what is the point? Clearly, she doesn’t like Conrad that much and has always been planning on taking him out, but why does she hate Gina so much?
What does Maeve gain from destroying everyone?
I’m inclined to think that while Conrad has been losing control of his emotions, Maeve is just crazy.
She is always doing something, but it lacks any narrative consequences beyond sowing chaos for its own sake.
A normal person would see Eddie and Gina’s new business as an opportunity, not a threat.
If Jan will be the end for Harry, Eddie and Gina will be that for Maeve.
But they all need to survive what has come knocking at their door, because Tatersall is tired of playing nice with them.
They have embarrassed him and killed his people, yet they seem to emerge unscathed.
This is no longer about law and order; it is a personal vendetta.
Tatersall pushes all the buttons he can, and this hour, the Harrigans are in for the shock of their lives.
The sequence in which Frankie and his people play target practice with the Harrigans is exciting but felt a bit underwhelming.
I feel it could have been elevated because, after watching Gangs of London, I have a high bar for action scenes, especially shootouts.
And after two short episodes, Fergus is one of the people who dies as his head interferes with a fast bullet’s trajectory, leaving his brain exposed.
I called it in the MobLand Season 2 premiere review, and no, I hadn’t watched the episode yet.
A young man with dreams of a posh gangster life in the big city is extinguished along with them.
He should have listened to his mother.
Wouldn’t it be a major callback if Fergus’ ma popped up in future seasons as the main antagonist trying to bring down the Harrigans for their part in her son’s death?
I guess she’ll have to settle for her brother’s head.
By the hour’s end, many Harrigans are left in danger; some may not come out alive.
However, someone needs to die, and I don’t mean Eddie’s mother. The show needs to kill someone of consequence to propel this story to where it needs to go and position Frankie as a threat.
Otherwise, killing Bella off would be like sacrificing a pawn or whichever piece is the least important in chess.
Gut Check
“Song 2” has a clear theme that elevates the stakes in these characters’ lives. This is simply not about business and rival gangs trying to take over each other’s turf.
It is about what happens when unhinged people decide to settle personal scores.
It also frames some of Conrad’s actions as a lack of control rather than recklessness. That was a nice way to introduce the consequences of aging in this line of work.
