When Calls the Heart fans just learned that Melissa Gilbert won’t be returning to the popular Hallmark Channel series.
Gilbert broke the news herself yesterday on Instagram, stating that she wasn’t returning and that she was told it was due to budget issues.
Gilbert has played Georgie McGill since When Calls the Heart Season 12, and she’s appeared in seven episodes altogether.

George McGill was a force to be reckoned with. She knew how to scare witnesses into talking by reading them or training others like Rosemary to go undercover.
There weren’t many female forensic investigators back then, and Georgie McGill proved she was just as talented as any of them.
She knew how to put others in their place, and Bill delighted in watching that.
Bill Avery was one of the few who believed in her, so exploring that connection made perfect sense. That bond finally led to Bill’s first romantic relationship in ages.

I loved watching their slow-burn romance and wanted more of it, not less. Bill thrived on interacting with a strong, sassy partner.
I hate losing that because their chemistry and banter were so entertaining to watch.
She’s needed in Hope Valley not just to assist Bill and Nathan, but also to further develop her relationship with Bill.
They ended When Calls the Heart Season together, and Georgie ensured their friends knew they were a couple after Bill won the Pioneer Electric trial.

Where will Bill’s story go without Georgie? Will he return to popping up in random scenes unless he needs to solve a case?
None of us wants to see that.
I won’t disagree that When Calls the Heart features a bloated cast, but there are so many other people to cut before Melissa Gilbert.
Networks often cite budget constraints, and I wonder whether bringing Lori Loughlin back as Abigail Stanton on the Hallmark Channel drained their remaining funds.
If that’s the case, I wish we’d known earlier that Melissa Gilbert wasn’t returning, since the series had hinted that Bill and Georgie would be taking their relationship to the next level.

I wish there were a way to keep both women, especially since Abigail will only appear in half the episodes.
Why couldn’t we have Georgie McGill, too?
The series thrives on including many couples at different stages, and fans were rooting for them. I’m crushed.
I’ve enjoyed watching Melissa Gilbert and Jack Wagner on TV for years, so I was excited to see them in an on-screen couple.

Could When Calls the Heart be planning to return Bill and Abigail to each other’s orbit with her return?
While I used to like them together, I don’t like this idea. That makes Bill look fickle if he jumps to a new relationship so quickly.
Plus, we have no idea how the series will write Georgie out. None of the ideas sound tasteful to me.
They could pretend she was a blip on the radar or make them break up, allowing Bill to move on quickly. On the other hand, the series could kill her, prompting Bill to grieve.
None of these ideas appeals to me or honors Melissa Gilbert.

This news greatly diminished my excitement for the upcoming season.
