That was some season finale. It’s the first one Will Trent has done that wasn’t a two-part episode.
However, this finale featured plenty of action and heartbreak, setting the stage for Will Trent Season 5.
We’ll dive into the heartbreak a bit more later, but for now, let’s discuss how smart the series was in bringing back Faith’s trafficking case, and that it’ll likely reappear again next season.
Will Trent Season 4 Episode 18 featured a missing college student, which grew more sinister when it connected to Faith’s prior case.
The series tried something new when it let the teens help them, but Faith understood teenagers better than anyone.
After an entire season of being pregnant, Angie finally went into labor. It’s still difficult to discern if that car accident was random or related to the other case.
I Loved How Will Trent Season 4 Episode 18 Balanced The Crime and Humor Initially
Lately, Will Trent has leaned more serious, so I appreciated that the Season 4 finale combined a serious crime with a fun softball game.
They’ve been leading up to this for weeks, teasing Angie that she couldn’t play. I loved that we actually saw the game, and that Caleb was on the sidelines, cheering Will on and yelling out tips.
That had been a point of contention since Caleb had never seen Will play ball, and he finally had a front-row seat.
He didn’t even care that the team lost. Caleb was so proud that Will connected and hit the ball at his first game. It was an adorable moment to see, and I wish Caleb had been around more.
I wish we could have stayed with the fun dynamics, but Angie and Faith knew as soon as they saw three irate teenagers that something was off.
While teenagers can be irritating, the actual APD and GBI knew the right questions to ask, such as whether the cops who stopped them called it in.
That tipped Will off into thinking they were impostors and may have kidnapped their friend, while Faith was concerned about the bruises on Nick.
It Looked like a Kidnipping, but Turned Into Something Much More Dangerous
Procedurals feature so many kidnappings that we knew Will Trent included a twist up their sleeve besides just a dirty cop being involved.
Initially, it looked like the father, Dr. Lassen, was involved, since he looked shady, and I felt for the mom.
But as time went on, it appeared that Lizzie may have staged her kidnapping and that her friend Nick, who the imposter cops had beaten, was involved.
He’d already been in juvie and had a violent temper. While he seemed protective of Lizzie, he lost it when Will confronted him.
There was way more to this story.
I Appreciated How Faith Trusted Her Instincts and the Teens
Faith Mitchell proved that she deserved to be the next GBI Deputy Director. She followed keen observations and gut instincts.
Teenagers, especially boys, often lash out at authority after being sexually assaulted because they don’t know how to process their emotions.
I was relieved that Faith saw the tattoo that symbolized the teens who were in this trafficking ring. While it didn’t excuse his violent outbursts, Faith realized Nick had become accustomed to defending himself against anyone who laid a hand on him.
Faith realized that Lizzie’s father, Dr. Lassen, treated many of the trafficked girls, so she suspected that Nick and Lizzie learned that, but needed more info from Nick.
Nick was a hard nut to crack because he believed no one wanted to help him, since he wasn’t their problem.
Faith tried to convince him she knew how sinister some of these sex trafficking rings were, and she would help him, but he informed her there were different standards among the rich.
Faith actually seemed impressed that these survivors formed a network and staged a kidnapping in exchange for Dr. Lassen’s notes so they could identify and locate the rest of the victims and pedophiles.
I loved that Will and Faith had reconciled, and he totally backed her using the teenagers as part of the investigation since they had extra resources.
While Ormewood was not initially on board, he also believed in Faith, which prompted her to think of a new plan outside the box.
I Wanted Will to Have a Family and Give Back, but Not Like That
There’s no secret that I’ve shipped Will and Angie since Will Trent began, but I’ve grown to appreciate their family dynamic even more.
I also came to enjoy Seth and Angie once he accepted how important Will was to her. I’d hoped Angie would get the happiness she richly deserved.
However, I became scared when Angie and Seth talked about how happy they were on the way to the hospital.
It reminded me of how happy Sydney and Vaughn were after they became engaged on Alias. We all know ABC dislikes happy couples, and this isn’t the first time Will Trent has done throwbacks to Alias.
Since this episode featured both dirty cops and shady doctors, I wondered if the crash was connected and if they were trying to kidnap Angie or the baby.
Seth looked fuzzy as he comforted Angie, so I guessed it was only a matter of time. While I liked him, I admit part of me was relieved it wasn’t Angie or the baby who died.
I still think there was a better way to give Will a family, but he stepped up to take care of Angie and her daughter, Edie.
I love how he remembered his promise to Amanda to serve, and he took that vow seriously, even as Angie was grieving and not yet ready to care for her baby.
It almost seemed like scenes from Three Men and a Baby, only it was just Will and little Edie, as he learned how to feed her and care for her, with the help of Nico and Betty.
That baby was the cutest thing, and everyone rejoiced when Angie finally recovered and was able to hold and raise her daughter along with them.
It was the dream they always wanted, but now it seemed bittersweet.
That Cliffhanger Should Lead into an Interesting Season 5
I’m not surprised that Faith is the new GBI director, but trading agents and detectives was a new one on me.
If Faith is working down at APD so she can solve this sex trafficking case and not have it be a conflict of interest, who will be her partner?
It hinted at her working with Angie again, but when Amanda worked as the GBI director, she wasn’t always in the field. However, that could leave Franklin out in left field.
I’m excited to see Will and Ormewood team up, even though they work differently, because they’ve become better friends. I think they’ll learn a great deal from each other.
Obviously, Faith’s instincts proved accurate since either the traffickers or Dr. Lassen sent the team a dead baby.
That had to be rough for Angie with her little one at home, but it only made them even more determined to stop these criminals.
Will Trent looks to be returning to only the core cast and more found family dynamics.
