Well done, Brilliant Minds — this story was far better than it seemed it was going to be from the preview.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 17 wasn’t an actual demon possession story, and I should have realized it wouldn’t be.
This season has been so uneven that I wouldn’t have put anything past the writers, but this time I was pleasantly surprised by where the main case went, and Oliver began to address some personal issues on top of it.

I Had Doubts, But I Shouldn’t Have
The opening scene of Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 17 felt like something out of a horror movie, and I couldn’t help wondering why we were having a Halloween episode in June.
That wasn’t it at all, of course, and I can’t help thinking I should have realized it sooner.
In retrospect, it was completely on-brand for Oliver to diagnose a fellow patient at Hudson Oaks with a neurological disorder, fight with the director of the hospital about it, and use a trick to get the patient to Bronx General for proper treatment.
The fact that the commercial and opening scenes made it seem like something else entirely only strengthened this episode’s theme.

Brilliant Minds, when it’s at its best, is about the way people with neurological disorders are often dismissed. It has always been focused on Oliver’s clash with a system that doesn’t approve of his methods or of his different way of looking at the world.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 17 is one of the few times this season that seemed to remember the original premise, even if the idea of Oliver diagnosing fellow patients in a mental hospital did feel slightly unrealistic.
It also confirmed my original belief that Amelia was more interested in filling beds than in patient care. Her attempt to keep Oliver there for another month in order to retaliate for his correctly diagnosing and thus removing Reagan from Hudson Oaks was absolutely disgusting.
It should not have taken Oliver’s influential mother to break the stranglehold. Technically, Oliver is there voluntarily, so I’d imagine he could have just left if he’d wanted to.
Still, it was nice to have Muriel on his side for once, rather than an obstacle to getting patients the care they needed.

The case was one of the most interesting, and Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 17 did a great job of ramping up the suspense after Oliver gave Reagan the steroids.
Oliver usually knows what he’s talking about, but there was always a chance that he could be wrong, so the fake “seizure” seemed completely real.
The reveal that Oliver had taught Reagan how to fake that seizure was one of the most brilliant twists in a while. It made me think of the early days of Matlock, when the twists were genuinely surprising.
The other twist was also well-done. I had no idea that Reagan had been in treatment for years and that the photo she had of her young children was extremely out-of-date.
Usually, when Brilliant Minds begins with a patient suffering from a severe illness, the patient immediately enters the hospital, so I wasn’t expecting that cold open to be years later.

Once Reagan recovered, she was worried about whether her children could forgive her for the years of chaos she’d caused.
I wish we could have had more closure on this issue. It’s one of the most important aspects of mental health treatment — often, the person who is ill fears that they’ve ruined everything with out-of-control behavior, and in some cases, that’s not an unrealistic fear.
Still, I loved that Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 17 addressed this aspect of the treatment process, as well as Oliver’s struggle to get ready to go home. TV too often makes it look like once someone is no longer in an acute mental health crisis, they can just go back to their lives, and that’s not entirely true.

Dr. Adler is also a standout among the Hudson Oaks staff. He has been empathetic and nurturing, which is a stark contrast to the stereotypical staff that seems to live to sedate or drag off patients.
I also loved the callback to the Hudson River swims and Oliver using the pool as a way of reclaiming his life outside of Hudson Oaks.

Enough About The Case — Let’s Celebrate The Good Personal Stuff!
Carol’s case seemed too easily resolved, and I’m not sure I trust that Whitney really spoke to Zeke about not being a virgin, but that’s a minor issue, especially because we had so many great Oliver/Nichols moments on Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 17.
Nichols was Oliver’s rock throughout his stay in Hudson Oaks, and his desire to get rid of Charlie stemmed from loyalty to Wolf and the need to stop the bullying and sabotage that were going on.
I’m glad Beau realized that Nichols’ heart lay elsewhere and bowed out. I hate love triangles with a passion, and with only a few episodes left of Brilliant Minds, we didn’t need to waste any more time on this one.
I also liked Muriel ensuring that Charlie left Bronx General, although treating Oliver like he’s fragile and attempting to remove all stressors before he returns won’t help him.

Hopefully, these developments mean Oliver is headed for a happy ending with Nichols, though it’s a shame we won’t have much time to enjoy this relationship getting back on track.
I’m not sure how I feel about Oliver forgiving Charlie. On the one hand, he gave Charlie some valuable advice, and it won’t do Oliver any good whatsoever to hold onto resentment.
On the other hand, I was glad that Charlie got sent away, and I want it to stay that way, so Oliver trying to convince him not to take the job at NYU didn’t sit well with me.

Still, I’m thrilled that the Hudson Oaks story seems to be over and that Oliver emerged with his relationships with Nichols and Carol intact, or mostly intact.
There’s still some work to be done as the series draws to a close, but we are getting closer to a happy ending, and if we can’t have more Brilliant Minds, this type of wrap-up is the next best thing.
