One of the best aspects of welcoming 9-1-1: Nashville into the 9-1-1 Universe has been meeting a new, diverse group of first responders and their families.
Cammie Raleigh is Nashville’s resident dispatcher with a heart of gold, continuously showing up for others and helping the residents of one of the nation’s busiest cities, all while wearing a radiant smile and leading with kindness.
That heart is on full display on 9-1-1: Nashville Season 1 Episode 16, which saw Cammie wrapped up in a case that brings back memories from her past.
Much of Cammie’s journey this season has centered around her continued grief over her husband Mark’s death. However, we’ve also gotten to see Cammie’s wonderful relationship with sister-in-law, Blythe.
And she even dipped her toe back into the music business alongside Taylor.
This season has also seen Cammie participate in a grief group and develop a budding relationship with FBI Agent Nick Turner, as the two teamed up to stop a citywide cyberattack.
Agent Turner was back to assist Cammie after a mother was murdered in her home, and her ex-husband stood out as a prime suspect.
The case took many twists and turns, as 9-1-1: Nashville cases tend to, and culminated in Cammie and Turner’s relationship tentatively taking a step beyond friendship.
With this new and exciting development, we had to talk to the lovely Kimberly Williams-Paisley about this week’s big case, what could be next for Cammie’s romantic future, and what’s in store for the 9-1-1: Nashville Season 1 finale.

I really enjoyed this episode, and Cammie’s big case of the week. She’s really had a lot of wild and heartbreaking calls this season. This one brought up a lot of opportunities for her to do some internal introspection.
Can you take us a bit deeper into Cammie’s feelings about Vera’s death and how she processes the weight of her role as a dispatcher in this situation where the outcome is beyond her control?
Yeah. And I think this is something that real-life operators deal with all the time, which is the guilt and the questioning, “Is there more I could have done? Did I think of everything?” That sort of thing. And I think you see that in Cammie in this episode.
She really gives it everything she has, and sometimes that’s not enough. And it’s really hard not to take what happens home with you. And many of the most successful long-term 911 operators have learned how not to do that and to leave work at work.
But I think so much has happened to Cammie that it’s hard for her to do that.
Through this case and season, one of the great things has been peeling back the layers of Cammie, learning new things about her, and seeing different sides of her. In this one, we saw her step up at the end of the case and help coordinate a fake SWAT response and everything like that.
Yeah. Yeah.
It was really smart. What layers of her have really surprised you the most this season?
I really love that they’ve taken the time to explore her pain because that’s not something that you see right off the bat. She seems so calm, cool, and assured, and really, she’s stuffed down a lot.
And so, I’m glad that as an actor, I’ve been able to, with the writers, bring that part of Cammie up to the surface because it’s such a huge part of who she is. It’s why she does what she does. It’s everything. It’s the motivation behind her leaving the music business and switching careers.
Exactly.
We see Cammie back in the grief group this week, which seems to have worked out pretty well for her. How significant do you think that space has been in her healing journey since Mark’s death?
I think that’s a really big part of her journey. It’s something that she could not have imagined doing a couple of years earlier, and meeting Agent Turner and having someone else who’d been through something like what she’s been through, I think, helped.
And then just getting around other people who’ve dealt with that kind of loss has really helped her unburden herself of the things she felt she couldn’t say or express. And maybe that was because of her children, maybe because of her family. She just felt like she had to keep going, going, going.
I think that a big part of her journey has been to slow down and actually share some of that pain.
We’ve seen Cammie and Turner team up earlier in the season during the big hacker storyline, which was really intense. And I think that was a very interesting way for them to meet and start bonding.
There’s a great comfort between the two, which makes them a really good pair. What is it about Turner that you think Cammie is drawn to and feels comfortable with?
Yeah, I love that. Did you see it coming, by the way, when Agent Turner showed up?
At first? No.
Yeah.
It took me until the end of the whole arc to be like, “Oh, okay. Yeah!”
And I think that that’s true for Cammie too, and that’s probably why it worked, because she didn’t see it coming. She got to know him really well on a work level, saw his mind working, how in control he was, and that he’s really good at his job.
Then they both got to share that. Then, when he says, “Oh, my wife passed away as well,” she realizes, ‘Oh, they have all this personal stuff in common.’
And I really like the pace of that relationship, that it’s just been very, very slow. And Cammie’s definitely not ready to jump into another relationship, and I think Agent Turner respects that.
So the relationship has kind of snuck up on them both, and I think that’s why it’s working.
Exactly. And Cammie accepting the offer, it’s just a beer, but it is definitely a date at the same time, feels like a big step for her. Whether this ends up being another big relationship or a big love is yet to be seen, but what do you think about her dating in general and putting herself out there?
What does that look like for Cammie at this point in her life?
I think that it’s a big deal. I think it’s something she maybe once thought she would never do. So, the fact that she’s doing it at all right now is a big step. And I would like to see her open up more over time and become more comfortable with it.
And I think she’s now open to finding happiness again, which is a huge healing step forward. But she’s still wearing her wedding ring, and she wears it through the end of the season. So, there’s still healing that needs to happen there.
I love that Cammie, obviously, has a connection with Blythe and her whole family, but would you like to see Cammie get to interact with some of the other characters and jump into some other things, especially now that you guys have a second season to explore some of that stuff?
Yeah, definitely. It was fun working with Hailey and exploring Cammie’s music producer side. And I think there are lots of opportunities. I’d love to work with Ryan a little bit more. And Dixie, too, for that matter, because Dixie’s in the music business. I’d love to hear Cammie’s opinion of Dixie.
Oh, that would be really interesting. The two of them, and just what that would look like — I would love to see that interaction.
Yeah, me too.
Since we are heading into the final run of the Nashville episodes this season, what’s something that you’re excited for the fans to see, especially as it relates to Cammie and what we’re going to continue to see from her this season?
I’m so excited for people to watch the finale. You’re definitely not going to have all the answers at the end of it. It’s such a fun cliffhanger, like craziness. They’ve just really gone for it with this, and I’m really excited to see what fans think of the final episodes.
I’m excited. 9-1-1 usually has great finales in general.
Yeah, this does not disappoint!

How has it been just joining the 9-1-1 family? I know you guys got to do the crossover, which was a lot of fun, such a good episode. What is it like being part of and growing this franchise that’s been around for years now?
Yes. I love being a part of this franchise. We had so much fun in the crossover, and we were just honored that they went ahead and did that. And the support from the original 9-1-1 cast has been amazing. I love being part of this universe, and the fans seem global, which is really cool.
People love this franchise around the world, so it’s an honor to be a part of it.
Absolutely.
And congratulations on getting a second season! How excited are you to continue telling Cammie’s story, and what aspects of her character are you most eager to dive into next?
I really am looking forward to seeing when, why, and how she lets go of her wedding ring. What is it that makes her finally ready to do that, if at all?
I’m excited to meet her kids. She’s got two kids who are in college, two daughters, so I can’t wait to meet my family! And then just dive into some of the other relationships.
When you start a show like this, there are so many different characters to establish. And now that we have a second season, it’ll be really fun to scratch beneath the surface on all of these relationships.
