It’s been announced that the 2025 Sugar Bowl, between Notre Dame and Georgia, has been postponed. This follows news of a mass casualty that occurred this Wednesday morning. The FBI has also shared more information about the deadly incident during its ongoing investigation.
The Sugar Bowl Traditionally Takes Place In New Orleans On New Year’s Day
The Sugar Bowl is a college football game that has traditionally been played annually since 1935 on New Year’s Day in New Orleans, Louisiana. The 2025 game was set to have the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Georgia Bulldogs face off in Caesars Superdome.
However, an incident that ended in mass casualties has caused the game to be postponed this year. Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley confirmed the news in a statement.

As shared by 247 Sports, the game has been postponed to 8:45 p.m. ET/7:45 p.m. CT. on Thursday night. Originally, the game was set for that time on Wednesday, keeping with its tradition of taking place on the first of January.
The Incident Took Place In The Early Hours Of January 1, 2025
Hundley’s statement read, “We were scheduled this evening to have a CFP quarterfinal played in the Superdome at 7:45. We have been in consultation with ESPN, with the College Football Playoff, with the Southeastern Conference, with the University of Georgia, with Notre Dame. All parties and all [involved] agree that it’s in the best interest of everybody and public safety that we postpone the game for 24 hours.”
“Work is fast about to set up a safe, efficient, and fun environment for tomorrow night. There will be more details on that in the coming hours, but for now that’s the plan that we’re going to move forward and play the game.”
The status of the game had been under speculation after a deadly incident took place in the area. As noted by the Associated Press, a vehicle raced into a crowd in the early hours of New Year’s Day in New Orleans. Ten people lost their lives and 35 others were also injured.
After the vehicle reached to a halt, the driver, later identified by the FBI as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, left the truck and opened fire on local police. Officers returned the fire, resulting in the driver’s death. Two officers were shot in the altercation were among those injured and are in stable condition.
At this time, the FBI is also investigating the incident as a possible act of terrorism. The FBI also doesn’t believe the act was carried out alone. Reportedly, other possible explosive devices were found within the French Quarter.
