America’s Got Talent recently debuted its latest season back in June, with finals coming right around the corner. In the interim, however, news has come out that one of the judges is already stepping away from the show, reportedly due to health-related reasons. This is Simon Cowell, and this also comes out as he recently discussed plans for his career.
Simon Cowell Became A Judge On America’s Got Talent In 2016, But Has Been Part Of The Show From The Start
America’s Got Talent recently debuted Season 21 on June 2, 2026. Howie Mandel, Mel B, Sofía Vergara, and Simon Cowell all returned to the judging panel.
Cowell joined the show as a judge in 2016 for Season 11, taking over for Howard Stern. However, he created the Got Talent franchise and has served as an executive producer for the show since 2006. In addition, he’s been part of a number of similar reality shows, including Pop Idol, American Idol, and The X Factor.
However, fans might soon notice a void this year at the judges’ table, at least for some time. According to TMZ, Cowell is set to take a break from the show.
Reportedly, Cowell is set to receive “routine back surgery.” The competition show judge has been said to be dealing with off-and-on back issues over the years. He previously underwent a back operation following a bike accident in 2020.
Cowell Also Recently Discussed Some New Music Plans: Developing The Next New Pop Band
The procedure will reportedly sideline Cowell for a “couple of weeks.” However, it’s unclear just when he will return to the show. At this time, another judge hasn’t been announced as a substitute. It’s unlikely that Stern would be returning to the show to fill in for Cowell, as he’s currently on summer break.
The outlet noted that they caught up with Cowell in March. At the time, he shared some big plans with his career. This included putting together another boy or girl group, saying he’s on the look for a next big act.
Meanwhile, America’s Got Talent is set to wrap up the season next month. Finals will air on September 22, with the finale on September 24, 2026. For the time being, NBC has not officially announced a renewal for Season 22 of America’s Got Talent. However, if it’s renewed, a new season will likely come out in late May or early June 2027.
