Alex Witt Joined MS NOW In 1999, Back When It Was MSNBC
As a journalist, Witt joined MSNBC, later MS NOW, as an anchor in 1999. She hosted Weekends with Alex Witt, which later became Alex Witt Reports.
In addition, Witt has also served as a host on MSNBC Live and Morning Joe First Look. Early in her career, she also served as a field producer for Today.
However, Witt’s time with the network has officially come to an end, as her last day on the network was on Sunday, September 6, 2026. That said, for the time being, she is still expected to appear as a fill-in anchor before the year is up. Back in June, it had previously been reported that she was retiring later in the year.
Antonia Hylton, Who Will Take Over Witt’s Anchor Chair, Also Shared A Tribute To Her
Since Witt’s departure, many fans and colleagues have been sharing tributes to her legacy with the network, having been a mainstay since 1999. Fellow weekend anchor Ayman Mohyeldin, for example, took to Instagram to share a photo of him working alongside Witt.
At the time, Mohyeldin wrote, “After nearly 30 years at MS NOW, Alex Witt is retiring. No other anchor has hosted more hours of news. … But Alex’s greatest quality isn’t her remarkable stamina. It is her humanity: her passion for journalism, her generosity toward her colleagues and the care she brings to everyone – and everything – around her.”
Antonia Hylton is set to take over Witt’s anchor chair with her new weekend show, The Assignment with Antonia Hylton. Recently, during a segment on Stephanie Ruhle’s weekday show, Money, Power, Politics, Hylton paid tribute to Witt, saying that she was a “legend and the Mayor of MS NOW.”
Hylton continued, “Alex Witt has chosen, after 30 legendary years here, to have this weekend be her last weekend of shows. And everybody who has ever met Alex Witt, watched her broadcast, you don’t need me to tell you that she is the epitome of grace under pressure, the queen of managing crazy breaking news.”
