Double trouble! The May 24 season finale of Marshals, the Yellowstone spinoff that pinned a badge on cowboy/former SEAL Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), ended with not one but two cliffhangers that are making us count the days until the show returns in the fall.
Bullets flew when unit leader Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) and teammate Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) were ambushed while investigating the assassination attempts on Broken Rock Chairman Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham). Turns out the triggermen were sent by rich rancher Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey), who’d masterminded the attacks on Rainwater.
“Season 2, we pick up right where we left off. [Cal and Belle] are not unscathed,” says Kebbel, now in production in Utah with her castmates including Marshall-Green. (Watch the video above for our full interview from the ATX TV Festival.) “I’m so used to Belle being in compromising situations at this point. I feel like it’s almost kind of a little bit of a character trait. She gets hurt a lot and also keeps going.”
Kebbel says that what happens next will have consequences for the direction of Cal and Belle’s burgeoning romance. “What does this mean for the two of them?” the actor says. “Since he is in front of me, if one of us goes down, how do we get out?”
The pair weren’t the only ones targeted by Weaver. The Montana charmer seemed to accept that East Camp would not be his after Kayce decided not to sell the land. Weaver even offered to take Kayce’s son Tate (Brecken Merrill) on a fishing trip — but then without telling the Dutton dad, guided the teen onto a private jet headed for Texas.
Kebbel shares that the Marshals team won’t hesitate to help Kayce get his son back, but some laws might get broken. “One of our overarching themes of this entire show is family and fighting for family,” the actor says. “When it comes to Tate, everyone is all-in, guns blazing. There’s no question we will stop at nothing to get him back. We know that Kayce will do anything and everything he can. The real question isn’t, ‘How far will you go to get him back?’ It’s ‘Where do you get in hot water with the law?’ Because justice doesn’t always equal law-abiding citizens.”
