Art Edmonds Details How ‘Home for Good’ Differs From ‘Military Makeover’

There’s no greater deed than giving back to your community, and host Art Edmonds, known for his years on Military Makeover With Montel, is honoring the good people who do — military veterans, first responders, firefighters, police officers, and even animal rescuers — with amazing home renovations in this new series Home for Good, which debuted May 20 as part of ABC’s Weekend Adventure block.

But the biggest difference from Military Makeover? The time they have with each stop. “From start to finish, we have about seven, eight days from the time that we first meet these incredible families,” explains Edmonds. “These individuals tell their story [and] we follow them along to what they do in their daily life, maybe have a little adventure along the way. Meanwhile, our construction and design team is working to bring that big reveal. And along the way, we’re educating our viewers about fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide to help protect the home and not only make it a beautiful space, but a safe sanctuary.”

In the Saturday, June 20, installment, Edmonds and his crew head to Austell, Georgia, to visit Medal of Valor recipient Jeffrey Perry, who spent 11 years in the Army and 31 as a police officer. Forced to medically retire due to an autoimmune disease, he’s now on dialysis and oxygen. “He can’t travel, and you’ll see in the episode the dozens of oxygen tanks he goes through in a day,” Edmonds says. “The one thing that he wanted, and desperately needed, was a backyard renovation.”

A deck with a ramp was a major necessity (his was “literally falling apart,” says Edmonds), and Perry was an avid gardener, who loves watching his dogs play in the yard. The transformation? Life-changing.

Says Edmonds: “He has spent a lifetime serving others, so we thought it was a great opportunity to serve him.”
