Bachelor alum Joe Amabile has revealed he was recently diagnosed with an early-stage brain tumor and will be undergoing surgery to have it removed and tested.
The 40-year-old reality star shared the news in an Instagram video on Monday (July 13), telling his followers, “So a little medical update… I didn’t share my Prenuvo results because they ended up finding a lesion in my brain. So then I had to go get a brain MRI, and there was a blueberry-sized lesion in my brain that looks to be a glioma, which is a tumor.”
Amabile, better known to Bachelor fans as “Grocery Store Joe,” revealed that he’s scheduled to undergo brain surgery in two weeks to “get it removed and get it tested.”
“So it’s been a wild couple weeks… Definitely wasn’t expecting this,” he added. “I think it’s one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, something like this never happened to me,’ and here I am. They say it’s really early stages. I hope they are able to get it all, and I’m fine. But I will keep you updated.”
He shared further details in the post’s caption, writing, “This past month has been a lot of ups and downs to say the least. After multiple scans and MRIs I have what looks to be an early stage brain tumor. In two weeks I’ll be undergoing a craniotomy to have it removed — yeah brain surgery — @memorialsloankettering.”
“I’m doing my best to stay positive during this time and am lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends,” Amabile continued before noting how he’d gone back and forth on whether to share the news on social media. “But ultimately this is part of my life now, so might as well. Onto a new journey.”
Amabile first appeared on Season 14 of The Bachelorette, hoping to win the affection of Becca Kufrin. He was eliminated on night one. However, he returned for the fifth season of Bachelor in Paradise, where he had an on/off romance with Kendall Long. He returned in Season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise, proposing to Serena Pitt in the finale; the pair later married.
Pitt shared her support for Amabile in the Instagram comments, writing, “You’re so strong and we’re going to get through this together. I love you.”
Fellow Bachelor alum also shared their well wishes, including Joey Graziadei, who wrote, “Sending all the love and support brother. Can’t wait to play a round of golf when you’re all better.
Wells Adams added, “Love you brother. You got this and we’ve got you!”
“I’m so sorry you are going through this brother and know that words can only do so much but you will be surrounded by prayers from countless people for strength and protection for both you and Serena. You’re not alone!” wrote Dale Moss.
