During a live special report, ABC News confirmed the death of their longtime anchor and correspondent passed away. The network cited that Barbara “shattered the glass ceiling” in the journalism industry that had previously been dominated by men.

As ABC News reminds everyone, Barbara first joined the network in 1976. She started her rise to fame as the very first female anchor on an evening news program. Just three years later, she snagged her place as the co-host of 20/20. In 1997, the extremely popular talk show The View. As those who still watch The View know, the talk show was airing new episodes of Season 26 just last month.
Barbara Walters’ career in journalism spread across five decades. During that time she won a dozen Emmy Awards. With the exception of one, the other eleven awards were all awarded to her while she was with ABC News.

Given her age, most of her fans and those who had the pleasure of working with her over the years suspect she may have passed due to natural causes related to her age.
During her time with ABC, Barbara Walters was remembered for some of the big names she interviewed including everyone from the Bay of Pigs with Fidel Castro to Israel’s Prime Minister Menachem Begin. She was recognized as a woman with a fire in her belly who wasn’t afraid to ask hard questions.
One of her favorite interview memories to tell people included the time she asked Vladimir Putin if he had ever actually ordered someone to be killed. On record, he told Barbara. “no.”
