Slow Horses is back for its sixth season and has already filmed its seventh, and an eighth is in the works.
The Emmy-winning series, led by Gary Oldman, follows the members of the British intelligence service who are the rejects of MI5. It is based on Mick Herron‘s Slough House novels, of which there are nine, and Season 6 adapts two of the books. So, what does that mean for the future of the series? Is Slow Horses renewed for Season 9?
No, at least not yet. But that’s not surprising given that Season 6 just premiered on September 16, and even with the early renewals this drama gets, that would be very much ahead of schedule.
When would Slow Horses Season 9 premiere?
While it’s too soon to speculate as to the exact time of the year, chances are it would be 2029.

There’s been at least one season a year since it debuted. Season 1 premiered in April 2022, Season 2 in December 2022, Season 3 in November 2023, Season 4 in September 2024, Season 5 in September 2025, and Season 6 now in September 2026. If the pattern holds, Season 7 will be in fall 2027 and Season 8 in fall 2028.
On which Mick Herron would Slow Horses Season 9 be based?
Season 1 was based on Slow Horses, Season 2 Dead Lions, Season 3 Real Tigers, Season 4 Spook Street, Season 5, London Rules, and Season 6 Joe Country and Slough House. Season 7 will cover Bad Actors, and Season 8 adapts the last published novel by Herron, Clown Town. It’s the ninth in his series.
But based on what Oldman told TV Insider as part of our in-depth Season 6 Fall Preview, there’s more to come. “Mick’s going to keep writing books, I guess,” he said. “And if Apple is happy with us and keeps writing the checks, they’re the ultimate — they’ll be the ones to keep it going or end it. I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
And there are also novellas that could be used for the TV show.
Who’s in the Slow Horses cast?
Slow Horses Season 6 stars, in addition to Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Rosalind Eleazar, Joanna Scanlan, Samuel West, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke, Jonathan Pryce, and Hugo Weaving. Lenny Rush joins the cast, and Olivia Cooke returns. We’ll have to wait to see who makes it through Season 8 before beginning to speculate about the Season 9 cast.
