Dark Matter has already gone beyond the book by Blake Crouch on which it’s based with the return for the second season this summer. But will it come back for more after that?

The Apple TV sci-fi series starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly is about the road not taken and, in its first season, introduced multiple versions of the characters. That suggests that there could be many more stories to tell beyond what we’ve seen so far and will with Season 2.

Read on for everything we know so far about a potential Dark Matter Season 3, including who could be in the cast, when it could premiere, and more.

Will there be a Dark Matter Season 3?

Apple TV has yet to renew the series, but those who work on it are planning for it to continue beyond Season 2 — but with a catch. A third season could be its last.

“We designed Season 2, and when we were pitching it to Apple, and we were going through the process of getting it greenlit we designed the whole show to be three seasons,” executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry told ScreenRant recently. “We see it as a trilogy and that would be such an amazing opportunity to get to end something on your own terms and having a real round and complete story. And we’re very hopeful that that’s something that happens. But we’re also just so excited for people to see Season 2 because I think it’s just going to be so much fun for the fans.”

When will Dark Matter Season 3 premiere?

It’s too early to speculate since it will depend on when a third season is picked up by Apple TV and when production begins.

Dark Matter Season 1 premiered on May 8, 2024, with the finale available on June 26. The series was renewed two months later, then it took two years to get Dark Matter Season 2, which will drop on Fridays from August 28 through October 30. It’s possible there could be another two-year wait.

Who stars in Dark Matter?

The cast of Dark Matter Season 2 includes Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley, and Amanda Brugel. We’ll have to wait to see how Season 2 plays out to see if all could return, but it does feel safe to assume that Edgerton and Connelly would be back.

Sony Pictures Television produces the series for Apple TV. Crouch is the creator, showrunner, and writer and serves as executive producer with Matt Tolmach, Richard Lederer, Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, Edgerton and Connelly. Crouch and Ben-Zekry co-wrote every Season 2 episode.

What is Dark Matter about?

In the first season, Edgerton’s Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor, and family man was “abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived,” Apple TV’s description says. “Season 2 picks up with the Dessens as they settle into a quiet life in a world that finally seems safe, until the unimaginable forces them to run once again. As Jason’s obsession with the Box deepens, Daniela’s (Connelly) growing paranoia pushes her to the brink, and their son Charlie (Oakes Fegley) starves for a sense of stability as their family is threatened. Elsewhere, Amanda (Alice Braga) and Ryan (Jimmi Simpson) join forces in a desperate attempt to find their way home. With Blair (Amanda Brugel) determined to stop him, Leighton (Dayo Okeniyi) relentlessly chases his grand vision of creating a perfect world.”
