The season premiere for the final season of Yellowjackets has been revealed, along with the first plot details. What does the season description reveal about the fourth and final season, when the soccer team finally gets rescued from the wilderness?

What happens in Yellowjackets Season 4?

The first plot details for Season 4 tease that rescue is on the way after Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) called for help on the repaired satellite phone at the end of Season 3.
“As the survivors race to bury their sins before rescue arrives and an old flame roars back into town with plans of her own,” the season description says, “turns out not every homecoming is a joyous one, and this one’s going to sting.”
It seems that the teens will be trying to hide all evidence of their murderous and cannibalistic practices in when the final season begins. The video teaser (above) also shows footage from the girls’ return, including news broadcasters asking who survived. A picture of Jackie (Ella Purnell) pops up in that moment. That can’t be a good omen for what rumors stir when the girls come back. The “old flame” part of the season description is also noteworthy. Is that about the present-day timeline?
The final season wrapped filming in July 2026. In an August appearance on Today, Melanie Lynskey admitted that she didn’t predict how Yellowjackets ends, saying, “It’s a fun ending. Everyone gets a fun ending.”
“It’s so weird that it’s over. I mean, it’s been crazy,” she shared. “The show has been crazy. It gets crazier. We were all just like, ‘Wow, OK!’”
Yellowjackets may finally reveal what happened to Akilah in that cave in Season 4. Nia Sondaya has been promoted to a series regular for the fourth and final season. She has played teen Akilah, one of the high schoolers stranded in the wilderness after the plane crash, in a recurring role since Season 2. Keeya King played Akilah in Season 1.
The last time we saw Akilah, she was in a cave with teen Lottie (Courtney Eaton), not long before young Natalie made it to the top of the mountain to send a distress signal on a satellite phone. Akilah wasn’t seen with the group as they discovered Natalie made it up. Eaton told TV Insider that Akilah’s fate is a big point of concern for the cast. Without an adult casting for Akilah, it’s been assumed that she doesn’t make it out of the wilderness.

Why is Yellowjackets ending?
The creators of Yellowjackets originally envisioned a five-season arc for the series, but ultimately decided it should end with Season 4.
On October 10, 2025, Variety announced that Season 4 of Yellowjackets would be the show’s final season. “After three incredible seasons, and great consideration, we’re excited to announce that we will be bringing the story of Yellowjackets to its twisted conclusion in this fourth and final season,” said series creators and co-showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson.
The series was renewed for Season 4 on May 20, over a month after the Season 3 finale came out. The finale was the show’s most-watched episode ever, according to Paramount+, and Season 3 was also the most-watched season to date. On social, Season 3 stands as the most-engaged season ever for the show.
Yellowjackets has been killing off its adult cast since the very first season, but they kicked things up a notch with four major deaths in Season 3. With the show returning for one last run, those deaths won’t go unaddressed.

Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress, Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson, Warren Kole, Kevin Alves, Sarah Desjardins, Nia Sondaya, Jenna Burgess, and Hilary Swank star in the final season.
Simone Kessell (adult Lottie), Lauren Ambrose (adult Van), Steven Krueger (Coach Ben), and Alexa Barajas (Mari) are less certain for the returning cast, as their characters were killed off in Season 3. But the dead often come back to haunt the narrative in this mind-bending drama, so it’s not out of the question that they could appear again, like Ella Purnell’s Jackie.
