CBS Confirms Huge Shakeup With ‘The NFL Today’

TV Shows

CBS has confirmed a major shakeup is happening on the fan-favorite show The NFL Today. Two icons that have appeared on the program for years won’t be returning in the fall. Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms won’t be returning later this year after the summer break. Both long-time sports commentators are moving on to different things, although fans are sad to see them go. Keep reading to see what’s next for Esiason and Simms, plus who is going to take their spot on The NFL Today.

Two NFL Icons Leaving CBS Sports

Boomer Esiason was the first to break the news on his morning radio show Boomer and Gio. The former NFL quarterback said, “For the last two months, you know, I’ve been trying to figure out what I wanted to do and where I want to be. I am stepping away from The NFL Today on CBS, more their decision than maybe mine, but I really thought that the Super Bowl was my swan song.”

Although Boomer confirmed that he is leaving The NFL Today, he will still continue his morning show with Gio. A tweet from Awful Announcing confirmed that he signed an extension for the WFAN program. So, fans will still be able to tune in to Boomer and Gio.

Phil Simms’ announcement came shortly after Esiason’s. On Monday, he announced his exit from The NFL Today. “Great 26 year run with CBS SPORTS,” he wrote on X. “Even though that part of my career is over I look forward to what is next.”

Right now, neither sports announcer has revealed what will be next for them in their careers. Of course, Boomer Esiason will continue his morning show with Gio. However, Simms hasn’t spoken out about what he is planning to do next.

Who Will Take Their Place On The NFL Today?

CBS Sports wasted no time in announcing who would be replacing the two veterans on The NFL Today. On Monday, the network confirmed that Matt Ryan will be replacing the two analysts in the upcoming season. He is a former quarterback who retired from the NFL in April.

Matt Ryan will be joining the other remaining analysts on The NFL Today. They are Bill Cowher, James Brown, JJ Watt, and Nate Burleson.

David Berson, the president and CEO of CBS Sports spoke out about Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason leaving the show. “Phil and Boomer set the standard of excellence for NFL analysts,” he said. “We are so grateful for their immeasurable contributions to CBS Sports. We genuinely thank them for being incredible teammates and for their passion, dedication and commitment to elevating CBS Sports’ NFL coverage every season.”
