Dancing With the Stars

Strike up the band, because the ballroom floor’s about to get busy. The 35th season of the dancing competition opens with a two-night premiere, introducing the male celebrities on the first night, with the women to follow on Wednesday. All will be dancing to songs from the year the star was born, with the lowest-scoring pair eliminated at the end of each episode. Adele Zaikman, who won the summer’s Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro competition, joins the cast, paired with The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives‘ husband Conner Leavitt for a salsa routine to “Whoomp! There It Is.” Other first-night pairings: Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron with Sharna Burgess (tangoing to “Are You Gonna Go My Way”), Paralympian Ezra Frech with Daniella Karagach (tangoing to “Since U Been Gone”), pop star Taylor Hanson with Britt Stewart (quickstepping to “Tell Her About It”), Savannah Bananas’ Jackson Olson with Emma Slater (doing the cha-cha to “Wannabe”), Jimmy Kimmel Live! sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez with Witney Carson (cha-cha’ing to “Mr. Big Stuff”) and Glee alum and Grey’s Anatomy star Harry Shum Jr. with Jenna Johnson (cha-cha’ing to “Let’s Groove”). Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough return as hosts, with Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough on the judging panel.

America’s Got Talent

A dozen acts return to the stage for the talent competition’s semifinals, with only six advancing to next week’s finals and a chance to win $1 million. They’re performing for America’s vote via the AGT app, TikTok, and NBC.com, with results announced Wednesday (8/7c). The eclectic lineup includes animal acts (Acro Canine Crew, Olivia Befus), magicians (Young & Strange, Kameron Marshall, Geno Ploeger), a dance act (Come Here) and laser dance act (Royal Lasers), an aerial pole specialist (Veronika Goroshkova), comedians (Daniel Alvarez, Cesar Dias), a singer (Travis Garland), and a rapper (Luke Taleno). The six acts who go through will compete against the Golden Buzzer winners from the quarterfinal round: singers Nene Royal and Lai Noelle, magic troupe Hundred Fingers, and robotic dance ensemble Unitree.

Jimmy Kimmel Live!

In a collegial meeting of the late-night hosts, Jimmy Kimmel welcomes Stephen Colbert of CBS’ now-shuttered The Late Show as a guest, Colbert’s first late-night appearance since his show signed off in May, and providing the dethroned host something of a victory lap after Monday night’s Emmy win. It’s Colbert’s sixth time as a guest, but the first since The Late Show franchise was canceled, with the network citing financial losses and critics seeing it as a concession to political considerations during a controversial corporate merger. The affection between the hosts has been long established, with Kimmel taking out a billboard last year advocating for Colbert’s eventual Emmy win and Colbert returning the favor this year with an Instagram post. (Maybe next year, Jimmy.)

Tommy & Tuppence

Many would regard Agatha Christie’s best-selling mysteries as timeless, but a new and very loose adaptation of her stories about the amorous crime-solving duo Tommy and Tuppence brings the couple into the 21st century for a six-episode season of diverting capers. The two-part opener introduces impulsive Tuppence Cowley (The Good Doctor‘s Antonia Thomas) as an aspiring actress and the more cautious Tommy Beresford (The Buccaneers‘ Josh Dylan) as a crime novelist with a writing block. They share a romantic past from their university days, but as they team up to solve a murder at a wedding, the vibe is very much will-they-or-won’t-they, though we can sense where it’s heading. Imelda Staunton adds some puckish charm as Tommy’s Aunt Ada, a retired private detective.

The streamer’s “Eras of Agatha Christie” collection adds some more new titles: 1983’s A Caribbean Mystery, starring Helen Hayes as Miss Marple; 1964’s Murder Ahoy!, starring Margaret Rutherford as a more comedic version of the spinster sleuth; 1982’s Murder Is Easy (also with Hayes, but not as Miss Marple) and 1985’s Thirteen at Dinner, featuring Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot and co-starring Faye Dunaway.

R.J. Decker

The scruffy Florida private eye with an ex-con past, played with rumpled charisma by Grey’s Anatomy‘s Scott Speedman, is back for a second season, which picks up two months after the murder of crooked politician Victor Ochoa (David Zayas), a mystery that has temporarily sidelined R.J.’s romance with Victor’s daughter Emi (Jaina Lee Ortiz). That subplot takes a back seat in the opener, when one of R.J.’s former prison buddies is implicated in a series of bank robberies perpetrated by pantsless thieves known as the “bottomless bandits.” Trying to clear his friend’s name puts R.J. in the direct path of detective Mel Abreu (Bevin Bru), his ex’s wife, who’s assigned to the case and working alongside a visiting FBI agent (Saturday Night Live alum Sasheer Zamata) with whom she shares a complicated history.

INSIDE TUESDAY TV:

• A Very Haunted Renovation (8/7c, HGTV): Six designers move into a reportedly haunted house in Ohio to tackle spooky renovation challenges, starting with the bedroom, in a competition hosted by Anna Camp (True Blood, Scream 7).
• Kitchen Nightmares (8/7c, Fox): The two-hour season finale finds Gordon Ramsay trying to revive the fortunes of struggling Midwestern eateries in Illinois and Michigan.
• The Drop: A Snowfall Saga (9/8c, FX, streaming on Hulu): In the ’90s-set urban drama, Wanda (Gail Bean) gets a promotion at the record label, but gang conflicts endanger her deals with her cousin Lamar (Asante Blackk) and rapper Artillery (Simmie “Buddy” Sims III). Maybe her legally minded ex Leon (Isaiah John) can talk some common sense to the combatants: “Money or war: Can’t be both.”
• Dark Side of the Cage (9/8c, Vice TV): The docuseries profiles MMA legend Don Frye, who struggled with painkiller addiction as the sport took a toll on his body.

ON THE STREAM:

• Drunk History (streaming on Comedy Central‘s YouTube channel): The tipsy comedy series returns with short-form episodes, starting with Meghan Trainor impersonating Madonna as she recreates her infamous debut performance on MTV‘s VMA awards in 1984 with “Like a Virgin.”
• The Creep Tapes (streaming on Shudder): The horror series’ third season, dropping two episodes weekly, cues up new video tapes featuring the creepy serial killer played by Mark Duplass (The Morning Show), with guest stars including scream queen Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House).
• Jo Koy: Blue in the Face (streaming on Netflix): The Filipino-American comedian plays before a sold-out crowd at Stockton Arena, in an area once known as “Little Manila.”
• Vanessa Gonzalez: Mamona (streaming on Hulu): The comedian riffs on being raised in a Texas border town by a Catholic mother and a witch for a grandmother.
• Sambre (streaming on MHz Choice): An award-winning six-part French drama tracks the investigation into a series of sexual assaults along the Sambre River over several decades from the late 1980s to the #MeToo era.
• The Originals (8 pm/ET, streaming on Scripps Sports Network): The free streamer presents an interview series featuring sports broadcaster Suzy Kolber talking with influential sports figures. Followed by the premiere of Beyond the Curve (9 pm/ET), with Olympic track champion Sanya Richards-Ross in an intimate one-on-one conversation with athletes, entertainers, and media personalities.
