What happens if nature calls while in the middle of Double Jeopardy? Or if your tummy rumbles from hunger while waiting your turn in the green room? In a recent Reddit thread, these very important questions were addressed by fans in the Jeopardy! subreddit, and the answers might surprise you.
In a post titled “Contestants – Eating on the show?,” a Redditor asked the question: “I couldn’t find this info anywhere. When you’re a contestant on the show waiting your turn, do you wait in a green room or in the audience? If you brought food/drinks with you, are you allowed to consume that anytime you’re not playing? If you’re in a green room, presumably there is hot water for tea/coffee available?”
Former contestant Greg Munda, who appeared on the show in 2013, answered the question by stating, “On my taping day, everyone who was set to be a contestant or an alternate was in the studio audience all day until their turn to tape (after which they left the lot). No one in the audience brought any food, and no one was really eating, and I’m not surprised the rest of us contestants weren’t eating either, as we were all nervous about our turn.”

In addition to the food question, Munda also took on the issue of bodily functions: “I assume bathroom breaks were possible during breaks for commercials, but I don’t recall having to go.”
Munda continued: “Those of us who had to stay past lunch were led to the commissary a short ways away for a lunch break. It’s the same commissary the people who work there eat at, but we contestants were sequestered to our own table with one or two contestant coordinators to keep an eye on us. Lunch was paid for; we just had to hand the cashier our ‘lunch tickets’ like back in school.”
Another former contestant, Alison Betts, also wrote, “People absolutely eat and drink in the green room! They provide snacks and drinks, and you can also bring your own.
Jeopardy! alum Cory Anotado wrote that during the pandemic, lunch was provided, but socially distanced. “We were ushered outside back to the Sony Pictures parking garage and lined up. Several meal options were available. I chose and subsequently annihilated a fried chicken sandwich with salad and fruit. I think there was a cookie too. If I were to rank this chicken sandwich amongst fast-food chicken sandwiches, the ranking looks like this, from best to worst: Popeye’s, Jollibee, Sony Pictures’ Commissary, Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, McDonald’s.”
Sara Heard, who was on the show in 2011, posted: “I was on in 2011, so this info might be out of date. We spent an hour or so in the green room first, in a combination of coaching by a producer and getting make-up done. There was a buffet breakfast there. Once the shows started taping (five per day with very little downtime between) we all sat in the audience when not competing. I don’t honestly remember if there was a lunch break — I would assume so, but the day just seemed to go by so fast in my memory.”
So, do not fret. It appears that contestants will not starve while they wait their turn.
