Oh, to be a fly on the wall in the operating room in the Tuesday, November 3, episode of Doc. To say Amy’s (Molly Parker) love life is complicated is an understatement. She’s currently working with her ex-husband Michael (Omar Metwally), ex-boyfriend Jake (Jon Ecker) and ex-something Ben (Season 3’s new addition Blair Underwood). Due to the eight years of memory loss after a car accident, Amy doesn’t remember her relationship with Ben, and he’s not telling her much.
But in this next episode, she’ll be in a room with all three men, to save a patient whose secret past puts her life in danger. Elsewhere in the episode, Ben must scramble to save his artificial heart trial after a key donor withdraws funding, and Sonya (Anya Banerjee) and TJ’s (Patrick Walker) relationship is tested when her father visits.
Below, Molly Parker previews the hour (and drama).
Amy and Jake will be working together in this episode. Their personal relationship is complicated, but as we’ve seen, they do well together when it comes to patients. What will we see from them in this episode, both professionally and personally?
Molly Parker: Yes, after a few weeks of Amy and Jake being estranged, in Episode 6, they are brought together to treat a patient who must choose between leaving her lover behind to keep him safe or risking it all for love. In treating her, Amy and Jake have an opportunity to work as a team… which is how they first fell for each other. This closeness reminds them of how much they care for and respect one another despite all of the confusion in their recent past. Jon and I were very happy to have this opportunity to develop Amy and Jake’s love for each other. We don’t like it when they fight!

What can you tease about the patient whose past puts her life in danger?
This episode’s patient is played by a wonderful actor, Shakira Barrera. Her character, Sofia, has an old wound that resurfaces and forces her to confront a lie she has been living for a long time. It’s a very moving story about how we grow and heal even though our old wounds just keep coming back around.
Ben runs into trouble with his artificial heart trial. How aware is Amy of what’s going on there?
At this point, Amy is still gathering information about Ben. Who is this mysterious man and what did he mean to her? There are layers upon layers here, and it’s gonna take Amy a while to put all the pieces together.
We’ve seen glimpses of Amy and Ben’s past. So, what will we see between them at this point of the season, when it comes to what she knows about their past and might feel about him in the present?
What Amy knows about Ben for certain — and maybe all she really knows at the moment — is that Ben is a tremendous surgeon. Her faith in his talent as a doctor is total and when her patient needs a tricky surgery, she insists that only Ben can do it. And for reasons specific to this patient, secrecy is paramount. As a result, her being at Westside is need to know only… so Amy ends up in the operating room with Ben, Jake, and Michael! All her favorite men in one cozy operating room!
And Sonya’s father is visiting Westside. Is there anything coming up between Amy and Sonya as a result, since their relationship has been complicated?
Amy and Sonya have always struggled to get along but they are trying hard as they share the job of Chief Resident. This episode, Sonya finds her trust in Amy questioned when a meddlesome resident — yes, it’s Graham! — does his best to cause a rift between them. Combined with all that Sonya is dealing with in her personal life, it’s just a bit too much. Luckily, Sonya and Amy have more to gain by sticking together right now and their partnership is only getting stronger.
