Come on down the wedding aisle? A The Price Is Right contestant told host Drew Carey that they were going to marry him during an awkward moment on the game show.
Deborah Newton, from Long Island, New York, won the second item up for bid on Friday, June 5. She bid $1 on a 14-inch laptop, Bluetooth mouse, and mousepad. Since it was $780 and the next highest bid was $850, Newton won the bid and got to come to the stage to play a game.
She played the Bonus Game. It is a game played for four small prizes and one big prize. Typically, the big prize is a trip or car, etc., but since it was an all-cash Friday game, she played for $10,000.
The other prizes included a handexer grip tester, a portable air cooler, a triangle package, and a Petcube pet camera. Newton did not win the $10,000 since she lost the last three prizes.
However, since she got called up for a game, the game show contestant automatically advanced to the Showcase Showdown. The first to spin the wheel was Christian. He landed on .75.
When it was Newton’s turn, after she spun the wheel, she said, “I’m going to give a shoutout to Drew, my boo.” The host turned towards the camera, stuck his foot out, put his hands under his chin, and smiled, trying to act cute and shy.
She landed on .55 and spun again. She then landed on .20, tying with Christian.
It was then Jared’s, who won $20,000, turn to spin. He landed on .45 and then .75, so he went over and was eliminated. Christian and Newton spun again.
Christian spun an .85. When it came time for Newton to spin, she wanted to do another shoutout. Carey told her to do it after she spun.
After giving a shoutout to her niece, who she came with, she said to the host, “And I love you, Drew. I want to marry you… after I get divorced.” She laughed, but Carey just stood there silently.
Newton spun a .65, so she did not advance to the Showcase. “It was so nice meeting you,” Carey said.
Carey is not currently and has never been married. He was engaged to family therapist Amie Harwick, but they called off their engagement in 2018. She was then murdered by an ex-boyfriend in 2020. Since then, he revealed that he doesn’t date anymore.
Fans thought it was a very awkward moment for the host. “Awkward moment from today’s episode,” a Reddit user said. “Did anyone else hear the one lady during the showcase showdown say to Drew, ‘I’m gonna marry you after I get divorced.’ And Drew just straight up ignored her like she never said that?”
“The way people act on that show is so embarrassing. I could never do that,” another replied.
“I was amazed Drew kept a straight face, but he probably has a lot of experience dealing with overzealous fans,” a fan said.
“Yeah. I watched this with my parents, and we all agreed this was pretty weird,” a third added.
