Either by coincidence or design (though we suspect it was the former), the first seasons of Yellowstone spinoffs Dutton Ranch and Marshals ended with the kidnapping of the main characters’ sons. And both of the sons are, in theory, now in Texas. Could the Dutton siblings help save each other’s sons in the respective second seasons? Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser expressed interest in our Dutton Ranch finale interview.
Dutton Ranch Season 1 ended on July 3 with Carter (Finn Little) kidnapped by the cartel. Marshals Season 1 ended on May 24 with Tate (Brecken Merrill) kidnapped by the new big-bad villain, Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey). Tom said he was taking Tate on a fishing trip to help Kayce (Luke Grimes) after a deadly shoot-out at East Camp. The finale’s final moments revealed that Tom was connected to the string of attacks, and now he has Kayce’s son hostage. Tom said he was taking Tate to Texas, but that could have been a lie.
Wherever he is, could Aunt Beth (Reilly) and Uncle Rip (Hauser) get involved in saving him? And if Tate is in Texas, could Kayce end up down south to find his son and help save Carter while he’s at it? While staging a crossover by bringing characters over from the respective shows is simple enough, connecting the plots of these two Yellowstone spinoffs would be more complicated, because that would involve planning between the show’s writers’ rooms and production schedules that might not line up.
When TV Insider asked Reilly and Hauser if the similar Dutton Ranch and Marshals endings were planned, Reilly teased with a smile, “Maybe,” but left it at that. Hauser declined to directly address that possibility, but instead offered, “What I will say is I’d love to work with Luke. We saw him in New York for the Upfronts, Kelly and I both, and I just love him, man. I miss him.”
“I miss him too,” Reilly said, as Hauser added, “I love people that we’ve worked with over the years in Yellowstone, but the fact that he’s on his show and we’re on this show, if there’s a way to somewhere down the road do something special where he comes and visits us or if we go to Montana, great.”
“Go find our sons,” said Reilly. “But, you know, I think Beth misses her brother, so I would love that to happen. And we were all very close. Wes Bentley, who played Jamie, Kelsey [Asbille, who played Monica Dutton]. We were a family and we miss them very much. So the more we can get back in, that’s what we’re fighting for, Cole and I. Where we get our wishes, we would love to have as many back in our world.”
Reilly and Hauser also addressed Monica’s death, saying that not acknowledging that Marshals storyline in Dutton Ranch Season 1 was a “missed opportunity” they want to correct in Season 2.
“I think that happened before our show started in a story world,” Reilly said. “I imagine Beth and Rip had gone to Monica’s [funeral]. There has been some connection, and our story started after that. [Because of] the time thing, we didn’t see it in our story, but I would absolutely imagine that there’ll be some checking in on her brother, and we just didn’t see it this year. I think it’s something that was a missed opportunity, quite honestly, but we’re all both trying to start up these big shows. And I think we can see where there are gaps, and we see where things need to be fixed.”
