Ethan Lovett Officially Exits ‘General Hospital’ — Could He Return?

Christian Howard wrapped up his run as General Hospital‘s Ethan Lovett on the Tuesday, August 4 episode of the ABC soap.

The Port Charles newcomer stepped into the role on Monday, July 27, replacing Nathan Dean, who returned to the show in April 2026 after a six-year absence. During an interview with TV Insider, Dean exclusively revealed he had only signed on for a four-month arc, though the powers-that-be had pitched a much longer return.

“Initially, they wanted three years,” he explained. “I said, ‘I can’t do three years. There’s a lot going on in my personal life. I need to be home with my wife and all this stuff, so can’t do three years, can’t do two years.’ So, we agreed to do these next four months, see how it goes, and they have a pretty interesting little story lined up.”

That story included working with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), becoming lovers with Ava Jerome (Maura West) and having an ambiguous connection to the mysterious Delilah, the mother of baby Phoebe, whom Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) and Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) adopted.

On the Friday, July 31 episode, Ethan spied newcomer Hudson (Troy Lennon Appel), then made a beeline for his sister Lulu Spencer’s (Alexa Havins) house, where he packed up and told her he was leaving town.

When the action picked up on the August 4 episode, Ethan was in a hotel room in Oslo, Norway. Hudson followed Ethan there and confronted him about Delilah’s whereabouts. Ethan responded that both Delilah and her baby were dead, following complications during the pregnancy. An argument ensued between the men, giving Howard the opportunity to use his real-life martial arts skills. Their interaction ended with Hudson threatening Ethan and the lives of his family members.

After Hudson left, a battered Ethan called Ava. “You have to listen … I know you’re angry about me, but this is important. It’s about the baby,” he said through labored breath. “If anyone comes looking for that baby or starts asking questions, I need you to keep your mouth shut. Nobody can know that I was connected to this child in any way. Sweat to me you’ll keep this secret.” Ava promised she would, and Ethan said good-bye.

Unbeknownst to Ethan, Hudson had planted a listening device in his room and overheard the exchange, learning that Phoebe — whose adoption papers had just been signed in Port Charles — was, in fact, alive.

While the character’s departure felt abrupt, set-side sources tell TV Insider that this was always intended to be the conclusion of Ethan’s latest story and was not shortened to accommodate the recast. Furthermore, the door remains open for the character to return to Port Charles in the future.
