What To Know

  • Retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer announced a major breakthrough in Nancy Guthrie’s abduction case.
  • Crypto security firm CertiK classified it as a “wrench attack by proxy.”
  • Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since February 1.

A former FBI agent just shed light on a “huge breakthrough” in the Nancy Guthrie case as Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother remains missing.

On Saturday, June 13, retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer took to X to share major news from a cybersecurity company more than four months after the 84-year-old was abducted in Tucson, Arizona.

“It’s the biggest public break in Nancy’s Case, as CertiK, arguably the leading crypto security company in the world, has designated Nancy’s abduction as a wrench attack by proxy,” Coffindaffer, a NewsNation contributor, wrote.

She included a screenshot from CertiK, which read, “The 84-year-old mother of journalist Savannah Guthrie was kidnapped as part of a $6 million bitcoin ransom demand, illustrating the documented trend of proxy target selection already identified in our 2025 report.”

Additionally, the former FBI agent speculated, “Does CertiK have knowledge as to if Savannah has a Bitcoin account?”

Coffindaffer then declared, “This is a huge breakthrough. Times have changed. And how these networks operate is new to LE [law enforcement]. Unless LE knows who took Nancy, then a wrench by proxy is on the table. CertiK seems to know.”

Savannah’s mom was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on January 31. After Nancy’s family reported her missing on February 1, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI have pored through tips and started processing DNA evidence. No suspect has been named, as of writing, despite previous ransom letters demanding Bitcoin and Savannah offering a $1 million reward.

Most recently, on June 7, Savannah shared an emotional update, writing on her Instagram Stories, “Oh my, my soul it cries out, soul, it cries out,” alongside religious artwork. “Bring her home.”
