Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing more than six months after her disappearance — and a forensic psychologist made a bold claim about the ransom notes.
In an interview with Fox News Digital published on August 9, Dr. Kris Mohandie said he believes releasing two alleged ransom notes was the right decision. However, he doesn’t think they’re real.
“I don’t think the ransom note is legit, and I don’t think that that letter days later is legitimate,” Mohandie speculated. “But I think it’s appropriate for law enforcement to investigate it just in case it might be.”
He added, “A good investigation keeps an open mind. It really does.”
Additionally, Mohandie said that the writer including crime scene details in the first letter — such as Nancy’s Apple Watch and a broken floodlight on her property — isn’t necessarily proof that the note is legitimate.
“I don’t make much out of those two details,” he admitted. “They seem to be details that inadvertently could have gotten to somebody, and so that’s not enough for me to say, this is something only the killer would know.
Mohandie pointed to several red flags in the alleged ransom notes that caused him to “question the legitimacy,” including sending them to news outlets, stating that they were ransom notes, changing the pronouns “we” to “I.”
The forensic scientist also said he had doubts about the type of case investigators are dealing with in Nancy’s case.
“Unfortunately, I think this case is a simple matter of a burglary gone wrong and then attempts to cover things up,” Mohandie told Fox News Digital. “But that’s a hypothesis, and good investigators are investigating all hypotheses and following leads, and I think they’re doing their job here.”
Nancy was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on the evening of January 31. Despite investigators releasing footage of a masked suspect on the 84-year-old’s front porch and the two alleged ransom notes — plus Savannah offering a $1 million reward — no suspect has been named in the case.
