‘Grey’s Anatomy’s Texas Spinoff Gets Major Delay & Location Change

What To Know

  • After initially being announced for a midseason premiere, there’s been a major change to Grey’s Anatomy‘s Texas-set spinoff.
  • Not only will the series be delayed, but it will be produced outside of California.

Grey’s Anatomy fans will have to wait much longer than expected for the Texas-set spinoff to arrive on the airwaves.

The next series was originally announced to be part of the midseason, premiering in 2027, but according to Deadline, it is now being pushed to the 2027-2028 season of ABC’s fall premiere plans. Why? Well, it appears the network has decided to move the location of production for the series to Albuquerque, New Mexico, instead of remaining in Hollywood, where the main show is still filmed, due to a series of failed applications for California tax credits. (Both of the previous Grey’s Anatomy spinoffs, Private Practice and Station 19, were also produced in Los Angeles, along with many other ABC series created by Shonda Rhimes.)

Executive producer Betsy Beers explained the situation in a bit of testimony over the credits, saying, “So when our great partners at ABC applied for the new tax credits this past summer for our new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff set in West Texas, we assumed there’s a long history of loyalty to the state, fighting to stay here when there were no credits to be had, and the fact the odds were — as they had been with every single show that Shonda has created or co-created — there would be at least six seasons for a wonderful crew and staff to keep working and to sleep in their beds at night. It was also crucial since the cocreator and showrunner [Meg Marinis] is also running Grey’s, and the geographical proximity was key to her ability to do the job. How wrong we were! We were denied credit due to the fact we were not providing enough jobs for the state to consider us an asset. None of our past history or track record were taken into consideration.”

Beers explained that she learned the show, since it was new, could not qualify for the credit, adding, “We lost personnel, we lost a lot of time, and we lost money trying to find a way to stay where we have always been. Now we are filming in Albuquerque, where they have been wonderful to work with, but we want to be here.”

There’s no word yet on whether or how this affects the future of the flagship series.

Grey’s Anatomy, Thursdays, 10/9c, ABC
