What To Know

  • Season 5 of HGTV’s Battle on the Beach concluded with mother-daughter duo Michelle Mueller and Sydney Lorence winning the competition.
  • The season’s contestants, mentors, and judges took to social media to celebrate the end of the season.
  • Battle on the Beach returned for Season 5 last month after alleged cancellation reports, and featured new cast members such as Mika Kleinschmidt and Tristyn and Kamohai Kalama.

Battle on the Beach has officially crowned its latest champions.

Following reports that the series had allegedly been canceled, Battle on the Beach returned to HGTV for its fifth season on June 1. Ty Pennington returned to mentor this year’s teams with former judge Sarah Baeumler and new addition Mika Kleinschmidt, while Renovation Aloha‘s Tristyn and Kamohai Kalama joined the series as judges.

Like past seasons, the latest round of competition followed three teams of design duos as they transformed beachfront properties into dream vacation rentals. The team whose completed house scores the biggest rental rate wins the competition and a $50,000 prize. This year’s winners took home $56,000 after two teams chose to add some of their earnings to the grand prize.

At the end of the Monday, July 13, season finale, mother-daughter duo Michelle Mueller and Sydney Lorence from Lincoln, Nebraska, were named the winners of Season 5. “Well…we did it!” Lorence captioned a photo of the pair’s winning moment via Instagram. “I still don’t really know how to put all of this into words. But I can say without a doubt this was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. (Including childbirth. Dramatic? Maybe.) The long days, the chaos, the mistakes, the whiplash, the budget, being away from my kids, the deadlines, and the emotions were nonstop. We got lucky and you didn’t get to see all of our breakdowns. But it also became one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Lorence went on to praise the friendships she made with the show’s cast and crew, as well as highlighted the difficulty of leaving her family to film the show. “So thankful for a supportive husband and MIL who held down the fort while I was gone,” she gushed, “Winning still feels unreal. … Every team created beautiful homes, and I have so much respect for all of them. To be honest, i almost felt guilty about winning. The other contestants poured their hearts into their homes, and it showed. They are the only people who truly know how much work went into this. We’ll forever be bonded by this experience.”

She ended her post by thanking Battle on the Beach fans, writing, “Your support these last seven weeks meant more than I can explain. Every comment, message, share, and every person convincing someone to watch HGTV to cheer on the Nebraska girls in overalls made a difference.”

Angelina Jacobs, who competed with her husband, Steven, on the show, got sentimental about their experience on the show. “Having our work featured on HGTV was an unforgettable honor, and this home is a winner in our eyes,” she wrote via Instagram. “On a personal note, this opportunity arrived at a time when I was genuinely ready to walk away from my business. I was at my lowest point, but I stayed patient, kept the faith, and trusted the process. I am forever grateful to have our work seen on a national stage. Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey! THANK YOU TO THE ENTIRE TEAM SARAH AND THANK YOU HGTV!!”

Fellow competitors Josiah and Anna Julian celebrated winning the finale’s exterior design challenge via Instagram, and shared their appreciation for the chance to compete on the show. “Obviously we wish we would have won the whole season, but we’re proud of the house we created and how we worked together as husband and wife!” they wrote. “Thanks SO much to everyone who’s watched and supported us! It’s made this whole experience so much more fun!!”

Baeumler posted a special Instagram tribute to her teammates, Angelina and Steven, after the episode, writing, “You should be incredibly proud of what you accomplished. It was an honour to be part of your journey.”

Tristyn and Kamohai, meanwhile, said they were “forever grateful” to be a part of Season 5 in their own Instagram post. “Amazing people, so much fun, judging is hard because you want everyone to win because they are all so talented and worked so hard!” they wrote. “Truly inspired by the contestants on this season, they all created magic and deserve the world! Congrats to the winners! The cast, the coaches, the crew are all top notch and the best to work with! Huge success all around, we had a blast, mahalo for having us BOTB S5 forever grateful!”
