It’s been eight years since Disney’s final chapter of Sofia the First. Nearly a decade later, we’re heading back to page one with Ariel Winter, who is returning as Princess Sofia in Sofia the First: Royal Magic. And before you ask, yes, we’re still finding out what being royal is all about!
“I’m so grateful to get to play Sofia,” Winter told TV Insider ahead of the premiere. “She is an incredible character that has really resonated with so many people… I just feel so grateful to come back and help influence another generation of young kids.” Looking back at the beginning of her time as Sofia, at just 13, Winter added, “It’s just an honor. Getting to be a Disney princess in general is such a dream, especially as a young girl.”
Last time we saw Sofia, she had just defeated Vor and become the official protector of the EverRealm. Now, she’s enrolling in Charmswell School for Royal Magic. “Sofia doesn’t want a break,” the Modern Family alum revealed, confirming that there is no time jump before Sofia the First: Royal Magic. “She is a brave, strong, powerful girl, and she’s just ready to go.”

Throughout Sofia the First, Sofia met multiple Disney Princesses, all of whom came from their own kingdoms to Enchancia through Sofia’s magical amulet. Sofia the First: Royal Magic has already teased that Moana, Rapunzel, Jasmine, Cinderella, Aurora, and Elena of Avalor will offer Sofia guidance throughout Season 1. Some princesses will even be voiced by their original actresses, like Moana‘s Auli’i Cravalho.
That said, Sofia is officially the most powerful princess in the EverRealm, so we couldn’t help but ask Winter about a popular fan theory: Do all of the Disney Princesses’ kingdoms exist in the EverRealm? As Winter put it, “You have blown my mind… You know what, potentially.” Looks like we’re going to ask creator Craig Gerber about this one.

Along with the return of fan-favorite Disney princesses, Sofia the First: Royal Magic introduces viewers to a few new royal friends. This season, Sofia meets Princess Layla, Prince Zane, and Princess Camila, played by young actors Mela Pietropaolo, Kai Harris, and Aaliyah Magcasi. As Winter put it: “I love them so much, [the actors] do incredible work.” Of course, fans can also look forward to meeting a new furry friend, Pupper the Peppercorn.
This season, Sofia’s also got some new magical abilities. “She has tons of new powers,” Winter teased. About to share more, Winter laughed, “I don’t want to spoil it for you! Actually, tune in—if I give you all of the powers, then you’re not going to be surprised!”
