Is ‘Sterling Point’ a Real Place? Filming Locations and More, Explained

- Advertisment -

It doesn’t take long for Annie (Ella Rubin) to fall in love with the island she inherited from her late grandfather in Prime Video’s Sterling Point. Though most of it has to do with her newfound friends, we’re sure the scenic landscape has something to do with it.

The YA drama from creator Megan Park sees 17-year-old Annie pack up her life in New York City for a small Canadian island where everyone knows everyone. Sterling Point residents get everywhere by boat, and Annie is only able to reach her grandfather’s remote cottage by seaplane.

It all begs the question: Is Sterling Point a place you can actually visit? Where was Season 1 filmed? Get all the answers below.

Is Sterling Point a real place?

Sterling Point is not, in fact, a real place. However, its lakeside small town vibe definitely echoes the region that it’s based on.

Fun fact: A company called Jayne’s Cottages rented out its “Sterling Point” property in the same region for Park’s 2024 film My Old Ass. Could that be where the name of Park’s fictional town comes from?

Where was Sterling Point filmed?

Though a portion of the show was shot in Toronto, the series was largely filmed in the Muskoka Lakes region, which is about two hours north of the city. As mentioned, it’s the same area that My Old Ass was filmed and takes place in.

Park, a Canadian herself, grew up spending summers in Muskoka. “We knew we wanted it to be a summer show set in Canada, and cottage life in the summer is a really huge part of Canadian culture,” Park told The Nightly. “We can really show Muskoka for what it really is, and talk about some of the things that are happening up there affecting the locals and the community.”

The region might already look and sound familiar to non-Canadians. If you watched Heated Rivalry, you might know that Shane’s (Hudson Williams) cottage is based in Muskoka, too. In fact, Jayne’s Cottages also owns and rents out Shane’s cottage, just like they did the My Old Ass house. Between Heated Rivalry and Sterling Point, maybe it’s time to pay a visit to Muskoka!
