Is ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘1944’ Still Happening After ‘6666’ Scrapped by Taylor Sheridan?

Two Yellowstone spinoffs were announced in 2022 and 2023: 6666 and 1944. Franchise creator Taylor Sheridan just confirmed that not only is the 6666 spinoff dead, but he also never intended to make it, despite being listed as an executive producer when it was announced by Paramount. 1944‘s status is still in limbo, but according to an industry newsletter, it might not be dead.

Is the Yellowstone spinoff 1944 still happening?

Journalist Matt Webb Mitovich “assured” in his Matt’s Inside Line June newsletter that 1944 is reportedly “still in development at Paramount.” There were no further details about the Yellowstone spinoff.

Sheridan said on the Rodeo Time podcast in August that he “would never fictionalize” the real-life Four Sixes Ranch.

“People thought that that was going to be a thing, but I would never do that,” he said. Sheridan didn’t mention 1944 in this interview.

The 6666 spinoff was presumably going to follow Jimmy’s (Jefferson White) life at the ranch after he moved to Texas from Montana in Yellowstone Season 4. While no plot details have been confirmed, the 1944 spinoff was speculated to be about the Dutton family, with potential surviving characters from 1923 appearing.

Sheridan is moving from Paramount to NBCUniversal once his overall deal expires. His new deal with NBC will begin in 2029, which leaves time for more Yellowstone spinoffs between now and then.

Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, said the following of 1944 and The Madison when they were announced in Fall 2023: “Within five years, we grew Yellowstone from a hit U.S. cable show with five million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions – and, we’re just getting started. On the heels of 1883 and 1923’s success, our new planned spinoffs, 1944 and 2024, will take audiences on a thrilling, new, and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon — thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan.”

What Yellowstone spinoffs are still in the works?

With 6666 dead, the only confirmed Yellowstone spinoffs are Marshals on CBS and Dutton Ranch on Paramount Network and Paramount+. Marshals is currently filming Season 2, set to premiere this October. And Dutton Ranch was renewed for Season 2 in June. Production updates on the second season will be announced at a later time.

Sheridan is returning to writing films after stepping away from creative control of the Yellowstone TV universe. His production company will produce two new films, Visalia and Capture the Flag. The movies come from Andrew Lauren, a producer of The Brutalist, who says he conceptualized these stories with Sheridan before Yellowstone became a hit.
