JD Vance recently went to Budapest as part of a campaign. During the moment, he was asked a few questions about Iran. However, one analogy made by the vice president caught some commenters by surprise.
JD Vance Was Asked About A Ceasefire Agreement Between The U.S. & Iran
Vance currently serves as the 50th vice president of the United States under President Donald Trump. He previously represented Ohio in the United States Senate.
In his personal life, Vance met his future spouse, Usha Chilukuri, while attending Yale Law School. The two married in 2014 and have since had three children and are currently expecting a fourth.
Recently, Vance has come under criticism for comments made on April 8 while in Budapest, Hungary. At the time, he was campaigning for the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán.
The vice president was addressing demands from Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf at the time. Ghalibaf has insisted that any possible peace deal must recognize the Middle Eastern country’s right to enrich uranium.
When asked about the Tuesday ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran. And is the current administration would make allowances towards Iran, Vance replied, “What the president has said is that we don’t want Iran to have the capacity to build a nuclear weapon. The president has also said that we don’t want Iran enriching towards a nuclear weapon, and we want Iran to give up the nuclear fuel. Those are going to be our demands during the negotiation, and again, we’re going to see what the Iranians are going to give up.”
However, Vance caught people’s attention when he was asked to comment on Ghalibaf’s claim that the U.S. had previously violated three terms of the ceasefire. The vice president mused, “The second thing Ghalibaf said, which again I found fascinating, is that he said, ‘We refuse to give up the right to enrichment.’”
A Few Commenters Questioned The Analogy On Social Media
“And I thought to myself, you know what, my wife has the right to skydive. But she doesn’t jump out of an airplane because she and I have an agreement that she’s not going to do that. Because I don’t want my wife jumping out of an airplane.”
Vance soon clarified what he intended, “We don’t really concern ourselves with what they claim they have the right to do. We concern ourselves with what they actually do.”
As noted by OK! Magazine, various commenters weighed in on Vance’s comments. Some thought it was an unusual analogy to make and seemed to be controlling out of context.
On the other hand, many came to Vance’s defense. Some even highlighted that they had similar agreements with their significant others. A few comments included:
- “‘We have an agreement’ is such a polite way of saying ‘the group chat would never hear the end of it.’ Honestly, me and my girl have the same deal about staying away from shark diving.”
- “My wife has a right to skydive but you know what? She has no right to do that, and I’ve stopped her doing it just like she stopped me sleeping on the couch.”
- “Weird analogy, Vance.”
- “Just let the woman skydive.”
