Betty Hume, a retired library reference assistant from Fredericksburg, Virginia, is now a two-day Jeopardy! champion who will vie for her third win on Monday. And she already has an army of fans, if the Jeopardy! subreddit is any indication.
In a thread simply titled “BETTY,” Reddit user Tasty-Bend-842 wrote, “I want to be Betty when I grow up.”
“I always root hard for older women on Jeopardy! because I’m one of them (older, that is — not on Jeopardy!),” added margueritedeville. “Was so excited for Betty today”
_Azamat_Bagatov commented, “She knew them answers about the 1960s space race and tiddlywinks! Sometimes it pays to be 80-plus years old!”

Setellangel77 said, “Last night my husband literally jumped up and cheered when she won!”
Hume also won over fans of Erica Doornek, the contestant whose four-game winning streak she ended. “I’m going to miss Erica,” orange_avenue wrote. “I feel like we could be friends. But watching Betty’s absolute shock was priceless.”
And Past-Action-4539 wrote, “BETTY NATION RISE.”

Thanks to a correct Final Jeopardy! response, Hume defeated Doornek, a federal employee originally from Glasgow, Montana, and fellow contestant Cameron Bays, a law student originally from Saginaw, Michigan, in Thursday’s episode.
“After the game, Betty told us that she’s been procrastinating trying out for Jeopardy! for decades!” host Ken Jennings told viewers the following day. “But she finally did it. And look at this, Betty. It worked. Procrastination works!”
In Friday’s episode, Hume fended off a challenge from Jeremy Rotman, a lawyer originally from Paris, France, and Sam Dhindsa, a product manager from Oakland, California. Hume went into Final Jeopardy! in second place, just as she had on Thursday, but again made a wise wager and walked away with the win.
