What To Know

  • Jimmy Kimmel gave Donald Trump a new nickname after the president appeared to nap during a 9/11 memorial ceremony.
  • The late-night host also aired a montage of Trump seemingly dozing off at various public events.
  • Elsewhere, Kimmel poked fun at Senator Mitch McConnell and Trump’s statements on AI.

Jimmy Kimmel coined the perfect nickname for Donald Trump on Tuesday night (September 15) after the president was caught napping during a September 11 memorial ceremony last week.

“At the event, Teddy Doze-evelt got in a pretty good nap,” the late-night host said on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! “He was sleeping so much on camera the White House had to put out a statement and said he wasn’t asleep; they said he was just ‘solemnly listening.’”

“Which is the same kind of ‘solemnly listening’ Melania does when he tries to crawl in bed with her,” Kimmel quipped.

He continued, “It’s so perfect. The guy who spent four years screaming, ‘Sleepy Joe, Sleepy Joe,’ constantly falling asleep on camera.”

Kimmel then played a montage of clips showing Trump appearing to nod off at various events, including his own inauguration, his Fourth of July fireworks parade, the NBA Finals, his Freedom 250 concert, the Pope’s funeral, Lindsey Graham’s funeral, several Oval Office announcements, and many Cabinet meetings.

The comedian did note one point in Trump’s favor, stating, “I will say this, compared to Mitch McConnell, Trump has more energy than Kevin Hart.”

Kimmel then rolled a clip of the 84-year-old senator returning to work earlier this week after a 92-day absence from public life. McConnell was hospitalized on June 14 after suffering a fall and returned to the Senate floor in a wheelchair. In the clip, reporters try to get a word with McConnell, who appears to look dazed.

“He seems good, right?” Kimmel joked. “For months, no one was sure if he was even alive. We still don’t know!”

Elsewhere in his monologue, Kimmel touched on the recent warnings about artificial intelligence and its threat to humanity. Trump, however, has brushed off the concerns and claimed that AI is under control.

“You know why [Trump] doesn’t want to stop AI?” Kimmel asked before highlighting the president’s obsession with posting AI-generated images of himself. “Because the only thing he knows how to use it for is to be Jesus, the Green Lantern, and Hulk Hogan at the same time.”
