Things in Joanna Gaines‘ Texas farmhouse have been a bit chaotic amid the home’s ongoing kitchen renovation.
The former Fixer Upper star gave fans a first look at the renovation process via Instagram last month. “Breakfast with a side of sawdust. #FarmReno,” she captioned an April 30 video of herself casually eating at the kitchen table as a construction crew worked loudly around her.
In the post’s comments, one fan wrote, “That sound is wild. Love you Jo! Can’t wait to see it completed!” Another quipped, “I too would like to order tacos and kitchen reno off the menu please!” Someone else stated, “Jojo Girl!! Ain’t you tired yet!! Wish I had half your energy!”
Gaines shared more details about the project in a Monday, May 11, Instagram video, including why she chose to remain in the house during the renovation process.
“I’m trying to do this renovation in pieces. I am stubborn in that I refuse to move out. The kids have two weeks left of school,” she explained. Showing off a new piece of furniture, she detailed, “The guys moved this wall over. This beautiful hutch came in last week. We already painted behind it. This weekend, we’ll paint the rest of the shiplap just a creamier white.”
She poked fun at the state of her house by showing one side decorated nicely, and the other messy with construction equipment and gear. “It is kind of funny that this is like my normal, and then, that’s a bit undone,” she joked.
In the clip, Gaines went on to highlight the “gorgeous, old warehouse” window she had installed in the kitchen, as well as shared footage of construction workers removing tiles from the walls. “This is gonna be a fun two weeks of trying to figure out how to end the school year well, but also work through mother’s emotional challenges through renovation,” she stated.
In the post’s caption, Gaines wrote, “Living through the farm renovation is building character, but getting a front-row seat to it all coming together is my favorite part. After almost 15 years, my kitchen is getting a whole new look.”
Fans reacted to the’ update — and Gaines’renovation stress — underneath the post. “Honestly, as an adult who lived through my parents building our house and a million renovations…..you’re just setting your kids up to be able to adapt in any situation,” one user commented. “No place to do homework? I’ll find a spot. No place to cook? I’ll just make a sandwich. It’s too loud in the house? I’ll just go outside. This is just good parenting and teaching some good life lessons lol Can’t wait to see it!!”
Another wrote, “If there’s one thing that you’ve shown us is that – it can be done!” Someone else posted, “I hope you will show us the final result! That hutch!” A separate commenter stated, “‘Mother’s emotional challenges through renovation ….’ Best summary ever.”
Joanna and her husband, Chip Gaines, purchased their Texas farmhouse in 2012 and moved into the home with their five children the following year. On Tuesday, May 12, Joanna shared sweet throwback photos of the house before they transformed it into their dream home.
“The farmhouse in 2012. My favorite fixer upper of all time,” she captioned the Instagram upload, which featured a snap of three of their kids sitting on the home’s front steps.
