Do you hear the people sing? On the fun Monday, July 20, episode of The 1% Club, host Joel McHale will get a musical surprise. The Fox game show brings in a group of 100 contestants who must answer increasingly difficult brain teaser–style questions to prove that they’re in the top 1% of the population. This time, they must also be able to carry a tune.
“One of the producers said [to me], ‘There might be a choir in the audience,’” the Community vet recalls. “To which I said, ‘That sounds like there’s going to be a choir in the audience.’ To which the producer said, ‘There might.’”
“The best part,” he continues, “was that they had written their own The 1% Club song, and it sounded absolutely fantastic. It’s a darn good thing I didn’t join in singing or people [would turn] the show off immediately.”
McHale took over hosting duties from original emcee Patton Oswalt on the series in 2025 after the show moved from streamer Prime Video to broadcast television on Fox. But McHale doesn’t claim to be more skilled than the players who step up to the podium. “I’m always surprised at how smart people are and how fast they can solve the puzzles,” McHale tells us. “It’s a good thing I’m the host or I would be out on the first question almost every time.”
“Not only do you have to be smart and darn good at puzzles, you have to be good under pressure because you only get 30 seconds,” he continues, admitting: “Just saying this makes me sweaty with nerves.”
Honestly? Us too. After the cheeky choir, stick around and see who will cash out the winner’s prize (which varies based on the gameplay that unfolds) on the Season 3 episode. Do-re-mi-fa-so, can you win it all?
