Lindy Booth Reveals What’s New About Cassandra and Stone’s Dynamic in Return (Exclusive)

Two of the original Librarians series OGs are back in the world of magic in the Sunday, August 30, episode of The Next Chapter, with Lindy Booth and Christian Kane reprising their roles as Cassandra Cillian and Jacob Stone.

These two Librarians come in as Guardian Charlie (Jessica Green) goes on an adventure herself with the rest of her team—Vikram (Callum McGowan), Lysa (Olivia Morris), and Connor (Bluey Robinson) — away on a Library retreat. Together, the three investigate after Charlie receives a call on a mysterious toy phone from a child trapped in a haunted house.

Below, Lindy Booth talks about playing Cassandra again and what’s different for her and Stone’s dynamic. Plus, check out our exclusive first looks at the OGs back in the video above, to see them encounter Charlie, and photo below.

How did you reprising your role this season come about?

Lindy Booth: I think Dean has this master plan, obviously, always, where he just loves all of these characters, and they’re all his babies. And I think at any point in time, he would have any one of us back. And so he had touched base at the beginning of the season when they started shooting Season 2 and asked me if I’d be up for it. And I was like, “Hands down, without a question, anytime, anywhere, let me know what’s going on.” And so yeah, I just jumped right in.

When I spoke with Dean, he said that the original team has still been doing their stuff. And you definitely feel that in Cassandra and Stone’s dynamic. So how was it slipping back into that with Christian?

So easy. It was amazing. It was actually really, really fun. Christian and I have, obviously, a long history of working together. And I was a little nervous, honestly, about coming back to see how that dynamic would’ve changed. Because yeah, speaking with Dean, he was like, “You guys have spent the past years doing your Librarian thing, and you’ve gotten better and then you worked together longer.” And so Christian and I sat down and had a conversation, and we’re like, “OK, how good are we at this at this point? How does that play out in our personal dynamic and in our professional dynamic?” And we had always sort of had this comedic, odd couple sort of back and forth with each other. And so this idea that they were this old married couple at this point who sort of bickered and finished each other’s sentences and knew exactly what the other person was going to say before the other person said it, and the writers gave that to us beautifully with just hilarious back and forth. So, actually, we were so nervous about it. Day one, scene one, we were like, “Oh, well, this never changed. We got it.” So it was actually really fun and really easy to slip back into.

And you feel just the exasperation that they have for each other, but you also feel the love that they have for each other in their scenes.

Yeah. I think you really get that idea that they understand what the other person does now. I think in the beginning, when we first became Librarians, there was this sort of misunderstanding of the value of another person. And that’s always been, in my mind, really paramount to the Librarians’ team concept, which is that you take people who are different, completely different and good at different things. And then how does it work when you try to put them all together in one room to solve one puzzle together? It’s a great metaphor for any work situation because we all have to work with people that have different skill sets than us. And I think that’s super relatable to fans of the show, just watching these people try to let the other person take charge when they’re good at it and take a step back when maybe they see that their skillset isn’t the primary one to offer in this situation. But I think at this point, there’s a developed respect between Stone and Cassandra that they’re able to let the other person shine when they need to.

We’ve been seeing the new team on The Next Chapter, but then when you see Cassandra and Stone, you get that sense of, “We’ve been doing this for a while.” You really feel that in them.

Yeah. I think part of the fun of when we started, and which is what the new team is going through now, is discovering magic and discovering how big that world can be. And so there’s a lot of awe and a lot of wonder. So to be able to now come back and be like, “Oh yeah, magic happens. The bogeyman, we know all about him. There’s a couple different types, actually.” To become all of a sudden experts at it, which is sort of the role that Noah Wyle had in our series, which is seen it all before. To watch these characters that we’ve seen be very new at the job and wide-eyed to now be old hat was fun for me. That was personally very rewarding to play with that.

And we really see that in Cassandra because she’s not at all who she was when we first met her on The Librarians or when we last saw her on there.

Yeah. Yeah. It’s fun. It’s part of the reason why I love doing TV is that if you’re lucky, you do get to play a character over a course of years. And so you do get to develop them and watch them grow, and sort of you grow with them as an actor, and you have some say in the way that character develops, and so that’s really rewarding. So then to come back years later and play the same character and watch her have developed even further, it’s pure joy. It never happens. I feel so lucky that I was able to do this with Cassandra because that’s a character that I personally really love and really relate to, and it has given me a lot of joy over the years, too.

We see Cassandra and Stone again when Charlie’s investigating a haunted house. What can you preview about this investigation, and what’s going on?

Well, I think that first of all, the set is incredible. The haunted house was just so creepy, even as an actor walking in. Thrilled that all the aesthetics on the show and all the sets are still living up to that Librarians aesthetic. It’s just such a beautiful set to work on. And then, also, I think what The Librarians does so well is they always attach sort of a deeper growth for character to the storyline. And in this one, we really get to see Charlie grow so much because at its heart, it’s an episode about fear and confronting your fear. And that’s the idea of the bogeyman and the idea of the monster under the bed is something that is so primal and so visceral to all of us that we all remember from our childhood. And then to have that comeback to these characters as adults and to see how they try to work through those very basic childhood fears, I think it’s a really, really well-done episode in that manner.

We’ve seen Stone with Charlie before, so we know what that dynamic is like, but what will we see from Cassandra and Charlie?

What I love about seeing Cassandra and Charlie together is that they’re so different. Again, it’s that idea of these characters who are from totally different worlds and how they lean into and respect each other’s strengths. I think Cassandra sees it right away, how strong and powerful Charlie is, and how we have to — she’s the one constantly telling Stone, like, “We’ve got to let her do her job. This is her job.” So, I think there’s a really sweet, fun relationship there.

I also think Cassandra just loves meeting new people. She’s always been one to throw herself into whatever situation she’s in. So, she’s just nothing but curiosity all the time. I think it’s what fans of the character really always responded to is just her open-hearted, pure joy. And as much as she’s matured and grown, she definitely has not lost her childlike wonder. And so she is just so curious about the new annex, what’s going on? Who are you working with? How do you work? What do you do? She’s really just excited to be there and excited to share and to make a new friend.

And I love Charlie’s reaction to Cassandra’s math thing.

Yeah. We knew it was coming. And for me, it’s pure joy to be able to do that again because I do have people come up to me on the streets and do that to me. So, it’s always fun to watch new people react to that. And Charlie, of course, has a very specific reaction to seeing Cassandra do math.

I do have to say, I wish that Cassandra had gotten to meet Merlin because that would’ve been fun.

Yes. I mean, look, I think there’s plenty more to introduce these characters to. I really think I would love to come back and do another episode to work with the whole team and to do more exploring of their sort of dynamic. Cassandra would have a lot to say.

She really would. Speaking of coming back, do you think it’s possible you could ever see the OG team all together again, whether on this show or in some other way?

Look, the OG team are all still very close as actors. And we love each other. We’re a very supportive little unit, and we do love this show. So I think there’s always — Dean works in mysterious ways, just like the Library. So I definitely think that there’s a chance we would all — I know we would all be game because we do love these characters and we love each other and we love playing in that sandbox.

I hope that happens because I loved the original series.

Thank you so much. Yeah, I think we had such a good time doing it. And I think that you see that all over the screen when you watch those episodes. So, it holds a special place in all of our hearts for sure, too.

Yeah, that’s just the nature of this franchise, though. It lends itself to having that on screen.

Yeah. I mean, it is that idea of putting these different people together and watching them sort it out. And then the world of magic, there’s literally anything is possible. So, every time we got a new script, it would just be pure wonder. What’s next week’s adventure going to look like? So it was the same for us as it was for our characters, which I think also made it really, really fun.
