The United States is facing a serious housing crisis. Due to rising rents, inflation, and availability, homelessness is on the rise. A startling new trend has become increasingly common in recent years: squatters. Sometimes entire families take over a vacant home that isn’t theirs, and in many places, it’s legal. LIVE hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are ready to expose squatters. Keep reading for all the details.

Many states have laws that protect tenants from greedy landlords and slumlords. However, those legal protections can be exploited by unscrupulous people. Using loopholes, they can force landlords into a long eviction process or in some cases, take over vacant houses.

Lawmakers are working to close the loopholes. But Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos aren’t waiting. They’re ready to expose squatters and tell them to “Get the f*** out.” That’s the title of a new Hulu docuseries detailing the horrors of squatters.

“The title didn’t come out of nowhere. This is what these very frustrated homeowners keep saying because they are so desperate,” Kelly Ripa told ABC Audio.

“We’ve sold homes,” Mark Consuelos said. “You just assume you’re selling your home, and you go check on it, and you’re not gonna find a family that has moved into your house.”

The process to get squatters out of your home or property can be long and costly. The squatters are legally allowed to stay in the home during the process.

LIVE Hosts Share Their Personal Experience

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos live in a $27 million brownstone on the Upper East Side. They bought the five-story home in 2013. The couple also has other vacation properties. They can relate to the struggles homeowners face with unwelcome squatters. They’ve never experienced it themselves, but a close friend has.

“He owns properties in California and he said that this is his life. There’s so many times that he has leased a property to a tenant who’s never paid rent and then he cannot evict them and so it is a part of his life,” Kelly Ripa shared.
